The contract from Trig the toymaker is simple. Kit will completely submit to him along with his apprentice, Riju, wear a spelled toy for a year, and learn self-control.
Trig gives Kit what he needs. Or what he thinks he needs. With Riju, Kit feels closer, although he can’t explain why. If Kit could only pick one, he knows who it would be.
Trig says Riju isn’t right in the head. That’s why he plays with dolls. He also says Riju can’t live alone, and his idea of owning a children’s toy shop is silly. When the relationship starts to splinter, leaving may not be as easy as Kit and Riju walking out. Trig’s not about to let go of his control so easily, especially over Riju.
