“Are you hurt?” he asks, his voice low and urgent.
I shake my head. “No, I’m okay. But we need to leave. Kate, my sister, she’s involved in all of this. And I don’t even know what ‘this’ is anymore.”
Aleksandr nods, his expression grave. He pulls me closer to him, leading me out further from the confusion Kate had brought into my life.
“Where are we going?” I finally ask, breaking the silence between us.
Aleksandr doesn’t answer immediately, instead pausing and turning to face me. “We’re going somewhere safe,” he finally says.
I frown at his vague response. “Where is that?”
He shakes his head. “I can’t tell you yet.”
My confusion turns to frustration at his evasiveness. “What do you mean you can’t tell me? You said you’re going to keep me safe, and now you won’t tell me where we’re going?”
“Emma, I promise you I’ll keep you protected. But right now, it’s not safe for you to know where we’re going,” Aleksandr explains, his voice gentle but firm.
I open my mouth to protest, but the determined look in his eye stops me. He’s not going to budge on this. So, I nod, resigning myself to his decision.
We continue walking in silence, the only sounds coming from the bustling street around us. My mind is still swirling with questions and confusion, but I can’t deny the comfort of having Aleksandr by my side.
Finally, we reach a nondescript building, and Aleksandr leads me inside. The interior is dimly lit, but I can make out a cozy-looking living area.
“We’ll be safe here,” Aleksandr tells me as he leads me towards the couch. “I think you should rest for a bit.”
I flop down on the couch, feeling exhaustion hit me all at once. This entire situation has been so overwhelming, and I don’t know how much more I can handle.
“Emma, did they hurt you?” he asks, sitting right next to me. I shake my head, feeling tears prick at the corners of my eyes. “No, they didn’t hurt me. It’s just, well, everything is so messed up.”
Aleksandr’s arm slides around my shoulders, pulling me closer to him. I lean into his warmth, feeling safe for the first time in what feels like forever.
“Tell me everything,” he says.
I take a deep breath, gathering my thoughts. “Okay, so here’s the deal. Maria, she’s Alina’s mom. She told all this to Kate because they’re close. Kate promised Maria that Alina would be safe. They even got me hired as the nanny through their assistant Grace, to keep an eye on Alina and gather information.”
I pause, trying to make sense of the tangled web. “But there’s more. Maria and Kate, they’ve been friends since college and now they run Madden’s, the beauty salon. It’s all a front for money laundering.”
Alex’s grip tightens, a silent encouragement to continue.
“Kate introduced Maria to her father, Michael Madden. They fell in love, which made Maria forget about Sergey. But Sergey was keeping Alina away from her, trying to force Maria to come back to him.”
I feel a lump in my throat as I continue. “Maria made a deal with Sergey. She’d come back to him only if he betrayed the Bratva. He did, and and he died. It was all part of her plan. Butwhat she didn’t expect was the Bratva taking in Alina. And now, the only way to get Alina out is through me.”
Aleksandr’s expression is a mix of shock and contemplation, reflecting the gravity of the situation. His eyes are hard, a steely resolve forming as he processes the revelation.
It’s clear that this web of deceit and manipulation runs deeper than any of us imagined, and I can’t help but wonder how we’ll navigate this treacherous path.
Aleksandr leans in, his voice firm yet reassuring. “We’ll figure it out.”
“How?” My voice is a mix of desperation and confusion.
“I don’t know, but they are not getting Alina back.” His determination is clear.
“Why not? That’s her mother!” I argue, feeling torn.
Aleksandr’s face hardens, his eyes reflecting a deep-seated resolve. “They are our enemies, Emma. They killed our men. What do you expect me to do?”
I shiver at the intensity in his voice, but I know he’s right. I can’t deny the loyalty and duty he feels toward his Bratva brothers. But I also can’t ignore the conflicting emotions I have towards this situation. Alina is an innocent child caught up in all of this, and I don’t want her to suffer because of her mother’s mistakes.
