“What?” Emma’s voice is barely a whisper.
And then, silence.
“Emma? Emma? Are you there?” I bark into the microphone, my voice echoing in the empty room. No response. Shit.
I grab my coat and head out the door. “Dmitri, move in now!” My words are clipped, urgent.
Dmitri acknowledges with a terse, “On it.”
Every second feels like an eternity as I rush towards Madden’s beauty salon, my mind racing with the worst-case scenarios. Emma’s safety is my responsibility, and I made her walk into the lion’s den, wired. What if they hurt her? What if they use her against us?
I pull out my phone, ready to dial the number that would bring every available man to that salon, ready to tear the place apart if it means getting Emma out safe.
My fingers hover over the screen, ready to make the call that could ignite an all-out war. But I hesitate. We need more information, can’t risk a blind assault. Not yet.
I put the phone away and focus on getting there as fast as possible. If I can just get to Emma, we can salvage this. I just need to get to her in time.
Chapter 22: On The Run
Emma
My life’s been one big lie, and Kate, my own sister, is behind it. I’m standing there, trying to make sense of all the lies she’s tangled me in. Her words are just noise, full of betrayal.
“Emma, listen,” Kate tries, but I can’t.
How could she be part of this mess? Part of the danger for Alina, me, and the Bratva men? I’m so mad and shocked.
“Listen to what, Kate? That you’ve been fooling me all this time?” My voice is shaky, full of hurt and anger.
Kate can’t even look at me. She’s feeling guilty. “It’s complicated, Emma. There’s more you don’t know.”
I’m shaking my head. “More? More lies, you mean?”
Just then, Maria steps forward, her eyes pleading. “Emma, you have to listen to us, please. For us. For Alina.” Her voice is soft, almost desperate.
But I can’t take it anymore. I pull my arm away from her grip and head towards the door, feeling a storm of emotions. Tears blur my vision as I push the door open and step into the chilly night.
Outside, the street is dimly lit, the sky covered in stormy gray clouds, and I take a deep breath, trying to calm myself. But then, I hear footsteps behind me, and before I can turn around to see who it is, I’m grabbed from behind and yanked into an alleyway.
I try to scream, but a hand clamps over my mouth, muffling my cries. And then, a familiar voice whispers in my ear, “Shh, Emma. It’s me.”
Relief floods through me when I realize it’s Aleksandr. “Thank god you’re here,” I breathe out, my body still shaking.
Aleksandr pulls his hand away from my mouth, but his grip on my arm tightens.
“Are you alright?” he asks, his voice laced with concern.
I nod, still trying to catch my breath. “I will be. I just need a minute.”
Aleksandr takes a step back, his eyes scanning me up and down. “What happened in there?”
I shake my head, feeling the hurt and anger rise up again. “It’s complicated.”
Aleksandr studies me for a moment before letting out a heavy sigh. “Okay. But we need to get out of here. It’s not safe.”
I nod, realizing he’s right. We start walking down the alleyway, my arm still firmly in Aleksandr’s grip. I look up at him, trying to read his expression in the dimness of the alley. His face is hard and determined, but there’s a glint of concern in his eyes that makes me feel somewhat comforted.
As we turn onto a busy street, Aleksandr continues to hold onto me tightly as we weave through the crowds of people. My mind is still reeling from everything that’s happened, and I can’t shake off the feeling of betrayal by Kate.
