“Wow, subtle, Elise.” I grin.

“I think you’re the last one who should complain.” She smirks.

“Touché.”

The Coven

*HENRY*

I’munsurewhatIexpected when Elodie said we’d be going to a coven. I’m ashamed to admit that I didn’t pay much attention to what my father tried to teach us during our rebellious teenage years. Deep inside, I always loved studying. I liked to gain new knowledge, and I secretly read a lot about mythology, history, and philosophy, but whenever my father wanted to teach us something, I closed off completely.

Tony and I missed quite a lot due to our dumbassery. We have more to catch up on now.

Once we’ve discussed some general details with Elodie and Elise, we head out to said coven, which is located in a beautiful old building with several floors. The coven itself is on the penthouse floor. Before we can even ring, the door opens automatically.

“Creepy,” I mutter, not able to shake off the slight feeling of distrust. I like to have control over things, and when a door opens without me having to ring or knock first, it’s definitely creepy. Despite my discomfort, I follow the others through the main entrance. There is no elevator, so we have to take the stairs to the top floor.

“You and Elodie know some witchcraft too, right, Elise?” Tony asks meanwhile.

Good question. I realize I’ve never even asked that, although Elodie is my mate. We were too busy fucking and discussing my problems that I completely neglected her. I need to change that soon and make sure she gets to share her story, too.

“Identical twins are said to have certain powers,” Elise explains. “For most humans, it’s a rumor, but for supernatural beings, it’s true. The deep mind link we share is just one of these special powers. It can also physically hurt us to be too far away from each other.”

So that’s one of the reasons Elodie wants to organize everything first before marking me.

“When we joined the Council, Prince Eric had us take lessons from a witch there, specializing in… you know… people who showed the talent to learn witchcraft without being witches.”

Again, I wonder if Tony and I would have learned something alike, too, had we shown more interest in anything aside from ourselves when growing up. I’m still shocked Dad never lost hope and kept believing in us. Sure, he lost his nerves sometimes, but he never gave up on us.

Elodie takes my hand as if she can sense my troubled feelings. “How come you and Elise joined the Council so early?”

“We met Prince Eric in school,” she explains. “He is a few years older than us and was graduating when we transferred to his school, but he immediately saw something in us.”

“Elodie and I lost our parents at an early age,” Elise clarifies for us. “Eric is like an older brother to us. One day after school, our bullies chased us, we held hands, and suddenly, a weird power went through us and pushed them away.”

Elodie nods. “Eric, who obviously was the most popular student and student body president, was following the bullies to see what they were up to and to kick their asses. That’s how we got to know each other.”

I squeeze Elodie’s hand, feeling how that experience still upsets her.If you want to tell me more later, I will listen,I promise.

She nods.I’d love to share some of my past with you.

And I would love to hear it. I don’t know much about you, and everything about you is fascinating.

To my surprise, her cheeks flush a bit.

Unfortunately, my brother was walking right behind us and immediately caught on to what was going on. “If you are sexting or sex-mind linking, please get a room.”

Elise bursts into helpless giggles.

To my relief, we reach the last floor before I need to come up with an answer, and the door opens again. A regal woman is already expecting us; her hair is blond, almost silver, and she looks… ageless. On first glance, I’d have said she is around forty, but on second glance, she could be a lot younger or a lot older.

How is that even possible?

“Young Alphas,” she greets us with a glint in her eyes. “And the twins from the Council… come inside.”

“Thank you for accepting us today.” Tony immediately takes over as the more talkative one of us. He is also far less socially awkward than I am.
