I grinned, wondering just how far I could go. He had some kind of point to make with me, and from the growing bulge in his jeans, he wasn’t finished with me. Not that I’d have sex with him—ever. But the fact that he was attracted to me could play in my favor.

“Or what?” I purred, enjoying his moment of surprise. “What happens if I push you?”

“Kali.” He said my name as a warning, coming out gruff and low. His eyes snapped to mine when I rolled my hips without any help from his hands.

“Did you do all this because you’re attracted to me?” I tilted my head, happy that I flipped the conversation.

“I’m keeping you here because you’re new,” he gritted out. His teeth clenched tight as I continued to find my own dance moves.

It was impossible to miss his hard-on now, proving he was affected by what I was doing.

“You want to kill me,” Zan murmured. “Don’t you?”

That was a question I didn’t mind answering. “Yes. You’re forcing me to be somewhere I don’t want to be.”

“The urge will only grow as you gain strength.” He chuckled, putting his other arm around me, making sure there wasn’t an inch of space between us. “You’ll learn to live with it. And not give in to that desire. Because let me tell you—you can’t kill me. No matter how hard you try. Vampires have tried before.”

“If I was at the center, would I learn to fear you like they all do?” I asked in a whisper.

“Yes. They were taught well, weren’t they?”

“Why? Who are you?”

“Who are you?” he countered. “Where did you come from?”

I pressed my lips together, not saying a word. A wicked gleam hit his eye, and he suddenly wedged his knee between my legs, forcing them apart. My heart leaped in my throat, his arms not letting me move away. He pressed his thigh against me, and I held my breath, keeping his stare. The leather pants were the only barrier between his leg and my clit.

“Keep dancing.” His hands went back to my hips, making my body grind against his.

“What are you doing?” I snapped. But it was clear that he was playing into my game, and I was now regretting it because I had no idea what he was going to do.

“I’m teaching. Since I’m keeping you from the center, that’s my job.” He smirked, leaning forward so he could whisper in my ear. “You need to learn the rules. But the way we keep new vampires in line is by showing them all the good we can give too. The alcohol. The drugs. This club. How even the simplest things can feel fucking amazing once the changes start happening after you turn. I bet your body is buzzing just from my touch, isn’t it?”

My lower stomach twinged in a way I’d only felt a few times in the past, and I hated to admit he was right. The instant reminder that I wasn’t really a damn vampire sobered me right up. He was giving me pleasure. And I was enjoying it.

“No,” I breathed out, refusing to give into it. He was a vampire. And a smug asshole who was keeping me here against my will. I wouldn’t give him anything.

“Answer my questions,” he demanded in a low voice. “Or I’ll keep you on this dance floor all fucking night.”

I couldn’t deny the jolts of pleasure, and I allowed myself to indulge because, fuck, I hadn’t had nearly enough experiences in life like this. Experiences that made me crave more. Made me forget the hardships of this life.

“I don’t think my new boss would be happy about that,” I rasped.

“She answers to me. Just like everyone else here except Pax and Viggo. I can do whatever I want to you, and no one would stop me.”

That threat really should have made me panic. Instead, all I could focus on were the waves of pleasure that were growing with each passing second. He knew exactly what he was doing to me if his heated gaze was anything to go by. Before I could try to push him away, there was a sudden commotion, and the music grew quieter. The vampires around us turned their attention toward the front.

Zan’s head whipped in that direction, and he moved his thigh from between my legs, spinning me around with him. He turned me until he was at my back again, but his arms never strayed from my waist.

Two vampires were dragging someone between them, and once they got away from the front door, they threw the person to the floor. I wasn’t sure if it was a human or vampire, and it was impossible to see their face because they were covered in blood and dirt. But as they struggled to climb to their feet, my blood ran cold.

Even though his back was turned to me, I would recognize him anywhere. It was easy when I’d known him my entire life. He swiped his hand over his face, trying to see through the smeared blood, and I silently screamed.

Warner whirled around, his hands clenching into fists as he swung at the closest vampire. Every muscle was frozen as I stared at my best friend. Anguish ripped through my chest. This wasn’t fucking happening. He couldn’t be here.

“Look what we found,” one of the vampires sneered, shoving Warner back to the floor.

“He was caught trying to get into the city. Took out two of us before we could disarm him.”
