Thank fuck I stashed my gun.
His hand landed on my waist, keeping a bruising grip on it to keep me from going anywhere. He rested his chin on my shoulder, his lips right near my ear.
“Dance with me.” It wasn’t an offer or a question, but a command. One he clearly intended for me to follow. This time, I couldn’t have done it even if I wanted to.
“I don’t know how,” I muttered.
He stilled, keeping his fingers digging into my hip. “You’ve never danced?”
“No.”
It was the only truth I’d given him. Because I doubted he was going to let me off this floor, and from the way the other vampires were moving around us, there was no way I could hide it. Women were rolling their hips, grinding on the male vampires, some bent over with their hands touching the floor. Other couples were facing each other, their hips moving in rhythm with each other’s. There were larger groups, their hands moving everywhere they could touch. It was like they were all having sex with their clothes on.
Did vampires enjoy sex like humans? Not that I had much experience. I’d had sex a total of five times. I didn’t understand what was so good. It only stressed me out. And the two guys I’d slept with were only chasing their own pleasure. I had a lot of practice getting myself off over the years.
Before the war, there had been something called birth control, but it wasn’t available anymore. PARA needed women to have babies so our race could survive. Which was funny, considering orphans were treated like burdens. They needed babies, but there weren’t enough resources to take care of them all properly.
I had absolutely no desire to bring a baby into this world. Not when I had grown up without parents. Or with how easy it was to die. Life wasn’t fun. Or happy. It was a chore. One I would never bestow on a child. Which was why I barely ever indulged in sex. Many people did it because it was fun. But I’d seen the accidental pregnancies, and I’d promised myself years ago that it would never be me.
“Have you heard this kind of music before?” he asked, pulling me from my thoughts.
“No.”
He made a noise that made me believe he was annoyed with my one-word answers. His other hand went to my free hip, and he held me firmly as he began moving back and forth to the beat of the music. I tried jerking away, but he didn’t give me an inch, keeping me pressed against his hard body. He moved me with him, the dancing causing new sensations to skitter through me.
“So you’d never been to a vampire city before you were turned,” he murmured, keeping his mouth near my ear so I could hear his quiet words.
I stiffened, realizing he was trying to learn about me.
“Are you from Project Hope?”
I stared straight ahead, acting like his continued moves weren’t affecting me at all.
“Or did you live with one of those free groups?”
I watched two female vampires kiss as they danced a few feet in front of me. Which was not helping the heat that was spreading slowly through my veins. The sexual tension surrounding me made my own body react as Zan’s moves grew faster.
“Where are you from, Kali?”
When I didn’t answer, his hands left my hips, and he suddenly spun me around. I managed to swallow my gasp when my chest slammed against his while he wrapped an arm around my waist. He raised his other hand, grasping my jaw to tilt my face up.
Fuck. I’d rather he kept me turned away from him. His unrelenting stare seemed to burn through me as I glared at him. He didn’t stop moving his hips, still dancing with the music.
“Where are you from?” He repeated his question, his eyes boring into mine.
“You can’t entrance me. I’m a new vampire,” I forced out breathlessly.
It was only a half lie since I wasn’t a vampire. But he couldn’t entrance me. The hawthorn plant had made sure of that. I hadn’t been without it since I started sneaking out of Project Hope.
He scoffed, dropping his hand from my face. “I’m aware. I’m only asking you a question.”
“Fuck. Off.”
He raised an eyebrow, his apparent amusement beginning to grate on me. “You see how all these vampires fear me, and you still talk to me like that?”
My stomach tightened. “I talked to you like this the first time we met, and you didn’t do anything to me.”
“I haven’t done anything to youyet. You shouldn’t push me.”
