“Then let me give you this shot, and I’ll get you up.”
She tried to wiggle away. “Shot! No…”
Alex sighed. “I need you to be a big girl for me. The shot is to get you better. You were very sick.”
“Oh,” she murmured.
“Lay on your side again. Now, close your eyes, count to five, and it will be done.”
“Okay, my eyes are closed. Alex, hurry. I have to pee. One, two…”
“It’s already done,” he said and laughed.
Her eyes widened, and she looked over her shoulder at him. “Really?”
“Yes.”
“You’re very good at that.”
He grunted and lifted her to a sitting position. “Tell me how you feel.”
“A little dizzy, but it’s going away.”
“Good. I want you to stand.”
She scooted off the mattress with his help and then stood by the bed. She wobbled a bit, but Alex held her, so she didn’t fall.
“How are we doing?”
“Good.” She looked up at his face. “You’re very tall.”
Alex laughed. “Or you’re just short.”
“I am. I wish I were taller and thinner.”
“For one thing, I like you just the way you are, and if you get any thinner, you’ll get sick.”
She shook her head. “I don’t want to be sick.”
“Good. Now, do you want to walk into the bathroom?” he asked, pointing to a room off the bedroom. “Or do you want me to carry you?”
“I want to try to walk.”
“All right.”
Raina shuffled into the bathroom with Alex close behind and turned and waited.
“What?” Alex asked.
“I’m not going to be able to pee with you in here,” she said in a disgruntled tone.
He rolled his eyes. “You know I’m a doctor. I’ve seen much worse than a person urinating.”
“But you haven’t watched me before.”
“You girls are all the same,” he said and smiled.
“What girls?”
