“We’ll discuss it later. You need to use the toilet. I’ll be right outside the door.”
“Okay.” She relaxed when he shut the door and sat. She bit back a groan when her bladder started to empty. It had been past full, and the relief was amazing. She didn’t even care that he probably heard her pee.
When she finished, she flushed the toilet and washed her hands. When she looked at herself in the mirror, she almost screamed. Her hair looked like a family of mice nesting in it. Her complexion was as pale as she had ever seen it, with bruises under her eyes.
She hadn’t realized she was leaning heavily on the counter until her legs started shaking.
“Alex…”
The door flew open. “I’m here, honey.”
“I don’t feel so good.”
He nodded and picked her up. “It will take some time for you to regain your strength. I don’t want you to push it, honey. It will only take longer for you to get better.”
She studied his face as he got her settled into bed. It looked like he’d changed the sheets because they smelled fresh.
“Did I get the other sheets dirty?”
He smiled at her. “Nothing that I can’t get out in the laundry. I don’t want you to worry about that.”
“I can pay for a new set. At least I’ll be able to when I figure things out.” God, how the hell was she going to get out of this predicament? Her only family was her aunt, and she had no friends that could help.
Alex sat down beside her and cupped her cheek. “What’s wrong, honey?”
Raina blinked her eyes a few times to push the tears back. “It’s just I have a lot to think about.”
“I don’t want you to worry. Whatever it is, we’ll figure it out.”
“You can’t help me. You might get in trouble, and I couldn’t stand that.”
“I’ve got a lot of friends, and I think between us, we can come up with a solution to your problem.”
She nodded. She’d think about it, but it might be her only choice. Time would tell.
Chapter Five
He wasn’t at all worried about fixing her problem. He’d do whatever it took.
“I’m going to get you some soup. I want you to eat as much as possible and then nap.”
She nodded.
“I’ll be right back.”
He heated up a bowl of chicken soup in the kitchen for Sally. He didn’t eat his meal from the previous night but remembered putting it in the refrigerator while locking the house up. He’d eat that after she fell back to sleep.
He took the tray with the bowl into the bedroom. “Here you go, Sally.”
He rolled his eyes when she looked confused about the name for a moment and then remembered.
He set the tray on her lap. “Do you want me to feed you?”
“No, I think I can do it.”
He sat beside her and waited. She could only get two spoonfuls up to her mouth because she was so shaky.
“Let me.”
