Macy nodded. “I agree with that.”

“The sheriff is the one that helped her find an apartment and job,” Jake said. “He’d be a good one to start with.”

“I’ll take some time this afternoon to go and talk with him.” Macy stared over at Cat. “I’d still like the name of the investigator you have, Nick.”

“You got it.”

“Here they come,” Caden said. Janessa walked over to Nick, and his arm wrapped around her, and he pulled her tighter to his body. He wanted to do that with Cat. Have a Dom/sub relationship where he had full privilege over her. But first, he needed to know who she was.

“Cat says she’ll be able to come to the party on Friday,” Janessa said to the guys.

Macy nodded. He was going to drag her there anyway, but if she came willingly, it would be easier if she went voluntarily. They talked for a few more minutes before Nick and Janessa left. The other guys left Macy and Cat alone to get back to work.

“Let’s finish up the room today. I’ll get you started,” Macy said. “I have to leave for a bit, but I’ll be back.”

“Macy, you don’t have to help get me started. I know where everything is,” Cat said.

He studied her for a moment and then nodded. “All right. I’ll come and find you when I get back. Remember, no ladders.”

He saw her body tense, but she just nodded. He kissed her forehead and then walked back outside to his truck. Twenty minutes later, Macy pulled up to the sheriff’s department. The building was a dull gray, but someone had put flowering bushes and plants around to soften the look. A tall desk was off to the left when he walked through the door. “Does Sheriff Bishop have some time for me?”

“I’ll ask. What’s your name?” the lady said.

“Tell him it’s Macy Anderson.”

“Just a moment.”

Macy was looking over a map of the town when Sheriff Daniel called out to him.

“Macy. Come back to my office.”

“Have a seat,” Daniel said, pointing to a chair on the other side of his desk before closing the door and sitting down. “What can I do for you today?”

“I want information on Cat. I’ve been told you helped her get settled here,” Macy said.

He saw Daniel stiffen.

“I’m not sure that’s a good idea,” Daniel said.

“What? Me knowing anything about her?” Macy asked.

Daniel sighed.

“Why? I know you don’t know me well yet, but what in the world would I do to her?” Macy asked.

Daniel looked down for a moment and sighed. “She was sent here from Texas. A friend of mine asked me to help her find an apartment and job when she got here. She had several things happen to her, but the worst was she had a Dom she’d been with since she was sixteen after her parents died. He was extremely abusive and kept her a prisoner in his home for four years.”

“No one knew about her?” Macy asked.

Daniel shook his head. “Not to my knowledge.”

“How’d she get away?”

“The guy, his name was Maximus, had a maid who helped get her out one night the old man wasn’t home. He usually kept her in rooms in the basement, but the maid was able to get her out. After they got away, the maid, Tessa, told her she’d heard her crying and knew she had to do something to help.”

Daniel ran a hand through his hair. “When Cat worried about her getting caught, Tessa told her she wasn’t returning to work because she was afraid. She was new because the old one had disappeared. Tessa had no idea she had saved Cat and herself that night.”

“Why?” Macy asked.
