Reluctantly, we say goodnight, keeping our hands to ourselves to not pass this virus around. Jerry walks me to my car and opens my door. My heart sinks as I get inside. Tonight was truly special. The effort he put in, how comfortable we were, it exceeded my expectations.
“Thank you, Jerry. Sorry I ruined our night.”
He shrugs one shoulder. “Don’t say that. Shit happens. We just do this again, yeah?” He eyes me expectantly.
With a heavy sigh, I force a smile despite feeling hot and cold at the same time. “I’d like that.”
“Drive safe. Let me know when you get home ’kay?”
“Kay.”
He winks and closes my door.
I swallow hard as I start the car and wave goodbye. Jerry shrinks in my rear-view mirror as I approach the highway.
Although my stomach turns from time to time, I arrive home without having to pull over. After showering and settling into bed, my phone dings.
Jerry: Feeling any better? Let me know if you want me to drop anything around, OK?
Me: Thanks. Hopefully I can sleep it off and will be right in the next day or two. Catch up later in the week? x
Jerry: Yup, whenever you want. Let me know
Setting my phone aside, I stare at the sliver of moonlight peeking through my blind. Things may have taken a turn tonight, spoiled one of the best dates of my life, but I made progress. I revealed more of myself, even if it was only a little.
Hope blossoms in my heart as my mind turns to Jerry.
Our relationship is off to a great start.
