"Well, what did you have in mind then?"
"An Illusion spell. It requires a lot less power and it's significantly easier on you."
"What's the difference between the two?"
"A Camouflage spell alters every aspect of your being. To be successful it requires me to change the basic code of your DNA - in this case your shifter DNA - and replace it with one of my choosing. Doing this is extremely taxing on the body, not to mention unbelievably painful. Whereas an Illusion spell will just mask the scent of your werewolf, giving you the ability to remain a shifter. From there, we can scent you as any creature you like. Wolf. Lion. Eagle. Whatever."
Void raised his hand like a teen in high school wanting to ask his teacher a question and Zamorra glared.
"Yes, Mr Vatali?" Thaddeus smirked, playing along.
"Can your little spell change her appearance as well? She's on the DW hit list. She can't go to a Regent Meeting looking like herself."
Thaddeus raised his brows in surprise. He gave her a curious look. "How did a sweet little thing like you manage to get yourself on there?"
Sweet?!
Zamorra growled.
Little?!Her werewolf snarled.
"You can thank Luther's stupid, gorgeous ex for that," she grumbled under her breath.
"Ah. Miss DuMont," Thaddeus grinned, a twinkle in his eye. "Their little kerfuffle was before my time. But I know what happened like everyone else."
Muffled groans reached her ears and she peered over the back of the couch Void was sitting on. Two Tyros were bound and gagged, lying crisscrossed over top of one another while Void rested his feet on their chest.
All of the Elite Guards had gone with Luther to the Regent Meeting, so he assigned five Tyros to watch her while he was out. It was like he didn't trust her or something.
Can you blame him? You're doing exactly what he told you not to do,her werewolf rumbled.
Meh,Zamorra shrugged.
He should have known that five wouldn't be enough though. Not with her uncle around to help kick their asses. Not by a long shot. The three other Tyros were all tied up with silver chains and spread haphazardly around the room, knocked out cold. Margaret had walked in, seen the unconscious vampires strewn across the room and simply laughed.
Sure, she knew Luther was probably gonna lose his marbles once he found out what they'd done, but she just couldn't bring herself to care. Not when the prospect of finally meeting Barnabas face to face was on the table. She'd deal with the consequences later.
"So, you know the story then?" Zamorra asked, watching Void nudge the groaning Tyro at his feet with the heel of his boot.
"Shh," the shifter hissed. "You're being too loud and I can't hear what Manu is saying. Be in pain quieter."
Zamorra rolled her eyes. Void was like her when it came to his TV shows. My Kitchen Rules was his current vice, which was blaring from the TV right at this moment.
"I know what everyone else knows," Thaddeus replied vaguely, moving a metal ornament shaped like a horse on the side table. He shifted it back to its original position and then frowned before moving it back again. "Disappointing news about Kylo, isn't it? I haven't seen Luthy that mad since I accidentally blew up his Maserati."
She raised her brows. "You blew up his car?"
"Accidentally," Thaddeus stressed.
She noticed his abrupt change in subject but chose not to acknowledge it. She didn't want to talk about Luther's gorgeous ex-girlfriend any more than he did. She addressed the first half of his sentence instead, making a mental note to grab the details about that Maserati later. She definitely wanted to hear that story.
"I'd say it's more 'shitty' than 'disappointing'."
Thaddeus was referring to the news they had discovered last night after examining Kylo's lifeless body. Like Arturo, he was a vampire in disguise and like Arturo they got shit all from him. The magical autopsy revealed no new information. There was no brand mark, but that didn't necessarily mean he was flying solo. He could still be a part of someone's House. Members didn't have brand marks, only servants did.
With nothing else to go on they were once again stalled. Their investigation into who was responsible for Night Flare was going nowhere. It was the whole 'one step forward, two steps back' nonsense. And Luther waslividabout the whole thing. His anger exploded out of him like a bomb, knocking everyone in his vicinity off their feet. Including her.
"Yes, that would be a more appropriate term, I think," Thaddeus agreed, laughing softly. "Now, let's get started. We don't want to be late to your first Regent Meeting, do we?" He gave her a stern look and she shook her head quickly. "Good. What will your creature be?"
