Chapter Six
Daisy had planned a speech in her head for Lee, but that went out of the window when she saw Nick and Elena there. What the hell was going on? Daisy couldn’t help but stare at Nick, panic brewing in her chest. What was he going to do now for screw things up?
Elena was the first to react, her face breaking into a sneer as she looked Daisy over.
“What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you have fucked off by now?”
“I was going to ask you the same thing.” Daisy frowned. “What did you want with Lee? I didn’t think you were on speaking terms.”
“Well, he’s a baker, and we need an engagement cake. Who else were we going to go to?”
“Engagement cake?”
“That’s right.” Smirking, Elena slipped her arms around Nick’s waist. “We’re engaged.”
Daisy looked at Nick, who was looking a little sheepish. This was the first time she had seen any emotion that wasn’t cocky arrogance at what he had done. She expected to be shocked and distraught over this news, but instead Daisy felt calm. There was nothing there for them.
And that didn’t surprise her as much as she expected it to.
“And this is what you’re really certain about, Nick?” Daisy asked.
“It is.” Nick looked down at Elena, who was gazing up at him adoringly. “We love each other, and we’re going to make it official.”
“Running out of my wedding wasn’t a way to make it official, then?” Daisy felt a bit of satisfaction seeing Nick’s face go a bit red. “Seeing as you two have been together for two years, it’s only natural to get engaged. But maybe this time make sure you only have one woman in your life. It gets very complicated sneaking around on two women, doesn’t it?”
“What?” Elena frowned. “What are you talking about? Nick’s not with anyone else.”
“Up until two weeks ago, he was with me.”
“I know that.”
“Then why didn’t he break up with me? It wasn’t because he was scared of my reaction; he didn’t give a shit at that point.” Daisy put her hands on her hips. “You just wanted to use as much money as you could without having to get rid of me. I was the cash cow.”
Elena spluttered. Behind her, Lee looked like he was trying to hide a smile. His sister, not so much. That spurred Daisy on as she advanced on Elena.
“By the way, how’s the apartment-hunting going? Or are you at your place now?”
“How did…?”
“I still have friends in the building. They said you were getting evicted. Plus, while Nick had the apartment lease in his name, I was paying all of the bills because he couldn’t. Including the rent. With your measly part-time job, I couldn’t see you keeping up with everything with me gone.”
“That’s not true!”
“Isn’t it? Nick proposed to me, and then he started fucking around with you. What did you say to him to get him to stray?” Daisy shot Nick a sharp look. “Or was this not the first time, and you were just one who kept his interest for the longest time?”
Elena’s eyes widened.
“Nick’s never cheated on me! It’s only been me he ever loved.”
“He cheated on me. What’s to say he’s not going to do it to you?”
If Daisy had been a spectator to this, she would have asked for some popcorn. Especially with the look on Elena’s face. Did she seriously think it would stop with just her? Daisy had been thinking about it for a while. She couldn’t have been the only one.
“But Nick loves me!” Elena cried. “He didn’t love you.”
“Then why did he stay with me?”
“Because you had money, and it was enough for what we wanted to do. You might be a measly musician, but you still earned what we deserved.”
