Page 77 of Love Me Again

“Do you still love me?” I question, gazing into her eyes. “The way you used to?” Shayla nods, her eyes overflowing with emotion. “Then we still have a chance, right?”

“Right.” She sighs, lowering her gaze to our hands that somehow found their way to each other. I brush my thumb over her fingers gently, and she licks her soft pink lips thoughtfully. I‘d give anything to be able to read her mind right now. We spent the rest of our ‘dinner’ murmuring to one another while we drank the bottle of wine. It almost felt like the old days again. I helped her clean up the kitchen, and it was gone midnight by the time we got upstairs. “Thank you for having dinner with me.” Shayla smiles warmly, tucking her hair delicately behind her ear.

“Thank you for forcing me. It was nice. It felt a little like old times.” I reply with a shrug, and she smiles, nodding in response.

“It sure was.” I look over her face as she sighs. “And this is where we say good night,” Shayla adds with a pretty smile, and I nod sheepishly, sliding my hands in the pockets of my trousers. Oh God, I just want to kiss her until my lungs give out. We agreed to go slow, but I know we’re both thinking the same thing.

“Good night, Shayla Hart.” I drawl as I used to, and her lips curl into a grin as she holds my gaze steadily.

“Good night, Cole Hoult.” She replies and, after a beat, slowly turns and walks into her bedroom. I look back at her as I walk to my own bedroom, and she keeps her eyes on mine until her door closes. I walk into my bedroom and close my door before I lean on it and lay my head back with a thump and groan in frustration.

I feel like a lusty teenager falling in love again for the first time.
