“Yes. Is that a problem?”

“N-no,” I managed, knowing Alicia would be furious if I chickened out after being called for an interview. “But could you please provide the job description and duties in your email?”

 “Absolutely.”

 “Thank you.”

“We look forward to seeing you on Thursday.”

 “Thursday.”

I was going to kill Alicia when I got home. What was she thinking, referring me to apply for an executive assistant position?

I stared up at the shining glass building in front of me and gulped. “Small company my ass. They’ve got a seven-story building to themselves.”

I straightened my jacket, secured my folder with extra copies of my resume, and strode towards the doors. I didn’t have any expectations of a job offer, but—as angry with her as I was—I wasn’t going to jeopardize Alicia’s reputation by not showing up for the interview.

The lobby was bright and airy, quiet but welcoming.

“Welcome to Techspeed Consulting,” a woman at the reception desk said. “How may I help you?”

I took a deep breath and blew it out slowly. “I’m here for an interview with Mr. McKinney.”

Her back straightened. “May I have your name?”

 “Ryan Lewis.”

She nodded. “Thank you, Mr. Lewis. Give me just a moment to call up.”

 “Ok.”

She picked up a handset, spoke into it, then turned back to me with a smile. “Darlene will be right down.” She motioned to a small sitting area. “Please, have a seat.”

“Ok. Thank you.” I walked over and sat on the edge of a chair.

My knee bounced as I waited, and I couldn’t quite figure out what to do with my hands. I set my folder on the seat beside me to keep myself from dropping it, then immediately picked it up again so that I wouldn’t forget it.

The ding of an elevator, then the click-clack of high heels.

 “Mr. Lewis?” a woman asked.

I looked up at a smartly-dressed woman, then stood. “That’s me.”

She smiled and extended a hand. “Darlene Smith.”

I shook her hand. “A pleasure.”

She studied me for a moment, then seemed to nod to herself. “If you’ll follow me, please.”

 “Ok.”

She turned towards the elevator and I fell in step behind her. It was when she leaned forward to press the button that I noticed a relatively new mating bite on her neck.

“Are…” I started. “Umm… congratulations on your recent mating?”

She turned and laughed, hand coming up to touch the mark. “Thank you.”
