She grinned. “I told them my roommate is looking, and it’s right up your alley. Your options are to either ask me for contact details or give me a copy of your resume to hand over. But I’m not going to let you pass on this.”

I groaned. “You’re really going to make me apply to a job I know nothing about?”

“Yep!” she chirped. “And you better believe that I’ll follow up if you want to submit yourself, but that is the preferred way to do this.”

“And what if it’s not as wonderful a job as you think it is?”

She crossed her arms. “Then you’ll be looking for something new in a matter of months anyway. Come on, you’ve been at the law firm what… nine? Ten months?”

“Something like that.”

“And that’s one of the longest jobs you’ve held since we started living together. You’re usually in the five to six-month range.”

“So why would you ruin your reputation with these customers if I leave jobs so fast anyway?” I grumbled.

She laughed. “Because I’m convinced you just haven’t found the right place yet. Besides, you’re a hard worker. They’re the types to appreciate that.”

“There’s no way to get out of this?” I asked.

“Nope!” she quipped. “You’re doing this.”

I groaned, then cursed as a can fell on my foot.

Chapter 2

~February~

Ifumbled and nearly dropped my cell phone when it rang. I stared at the screen for half a second, trying to decide if it was spam or not, then remembered that my contact information was on my resume. I answered just before the call would have gone to voicemail.

“Hello?”

“Yes, may I speak to a mister Ryan Lewis?” a pleasant female voice asked.

“Speaking.”

“Good afternoon, Mr. Lewis,” she stated. “My name is Darlene, and I’m calling from Techspeed Consulting, regarding your resume.”

“Oh, yes,” I replied, remembering the company Alicia had badgered me to apply at.

“Is now a good time?”

That was a good sign. I pinned my phone between my shoulder and ear, then grabbed a pen and paper. “Ok.”

“Mr. McKinney was impressed with your resume and would like to set up an interview. What is your availability this week?”

“I… ummm… I’m pretty sure I can get off on Thursday afternoon, but I need to check with my boss first.”

“That’s fine. I’ll pencil you in for Thursday at three-thirty, then you can let me know if you need to reschedule. I’ll email confirmation with my phone number to you.”

“Thank you.” I paused. “Can… can you tell me a bit more about the position?”

“Pardon?”

“A friend referred me to apply, and all I know is that it’s reception of some kind.”

She chuckled. “Actually it’s for an executive assistant position.”

“Executive?” I squeaked.
