I bowed my head, trying not to laugh. "Nini was feeling a little discouraged, so I helped her out," I explained.
He shook his head. "I might as well say welcome to the family now. She has you wrapped around her fingers already."
Nini picked up her glass of lemonade and smiled before she took a sip. It was the fact that he welcomed me into the family that had me wanting to blush, but I kept it together. I saw what he meant when he said Nini was a great kid because she was. He and Nya did a fantastic job with her. She was a respectful little girl with a bright future ahead of her.
"Yes, welcome to the family," she cheered.
A'Mylo and I laughed.
After dinner, Nini and I washed the dishes for him.
"Mommy lets me dry the dishes sometimes, too. I think it's fun." She dried a plate and handed it to me to put away.
"Oh yeah? When I was younger, I hated doing the dishes. That was the worst chore ever," I shared, passing her a fork to wash off.
Nini gasped as her small eyes widened. "Really? I think it's fun."
I laughed. "You're saying that now. Just wait. When you get older, you'll be saying something different."
She only laughed with me. Gosh, this little girl pulled at my heartstrings.
After Ni'Asia and I finished with the dishes, A'Mylo bathed his daughter, and I helped him. By the time we were done, I was tired. I didn't know it would be as much work as it was, but I loved that he included me in their nightly weekend routine.
By 9:30 p.m., Nini was asleep. A'Mylo and I sat in his living room with a glass of wine. Truth be told, I needed this quiet time. I didn't know if I would stay the night at his house or not. Since I hadn't brought a change of clothes, I doubted whether he'd wake his daughter up to take me home. I'd have to wait it out and see.
I truly enjoyed his daughter today. I thought for sure Nini wouldn't like me since I was with her father and not her mother. That was how kids were. To this day, I didn't care for my stepmother and stayed away from her. Perhaps I misjudged my stepmother, my father, and even my mother. As a child, all I saw was her breaking up our happy home. However, now that I was older, I saw relationships didn't always work out. Being with A'Mylo taught me that, especially what he shared with me about himself and his baby mama.
I sighed deeply and lowered my head to my chest.
"What's the matter?" A'Mylo asked.
"I thought for sure your daughter wouldn't like me or that she'd be mean to me," I admitted.
He tilted his head to the side and studied me with a frown. "Why would you think that? I told you she was a respectable child. Nini wouldn't do anything like that to anyone."
I nodded. "I know that, but my childhood came back to me. I thought I'd be getting my karma from the way I treated my stepmother."
A'Mylo reached out his hand for me to take it, and I did. I loved that he was so caring. He was a good man, and it showed in everything he did for me. "You know it's never too late to fix a problem. If you want to correct it, you still have time to do so."
He had a point, but I wouldn't know how to do so. It took a lot for me even to admit that. I could hold a grudge until the end of time and be very spiteful. I tried changing my ways, but that was hard to do. That was the Scorpio in me. When I felt like someone had wronged me, it was hard for me to let it go and forgive them.
I gazed down into the glass I held in my hand. "You're right. I have to find a way to make things right."
Mylo let go of my hand and leaned back on the couch, reaching out and caressing my thigh. His hand felt so good on me. "If you want, I can be there with you."
I glanced over at him and smiled a little. "That's sweet, but this has to be something I do on my own.
He nodded. "I understand, but I want you to know I'm always here for you."
"I know, and I appreciate you for that."
He leaned over and kissed my cheek. I moved back so our lips could touch to get a kiss from him.
"Just to let you know, you're staying the night."
I beamed. "I kind of figured that out, and I'm fine with that."
We continued to sit in silence while we sipped the wine. This was peaceful and was something I had never done before.
