Chapter 4

Dante hissed as the amber liquid burned as it traveled down his throat. His head spun with questions. What was Amalee lying about? It was something big, something she feared would make him hate her.

Closing his eyes, he allowed the memories to filter through his mind. She was sixteen when he came to work for her parents, Queen Alexis and King Charles. At thirty-six, he barely noticed her as anything other than their daughter. Then on her eighteenth birthday, something happened. He no longer saw her as a child. She had grown into a beautiful woman. Amalee was not shy about letting him know her feelings. He’d known she had a crush on him, but at that moment, something changed. He realized all the time he’d spent with her, his affection had morphed into something deeper, something more primal.

At his age, he knew it was wrong. But Amalee had a way of drawing you in and taking hold of your soul. He knew her parents wouldn’t approve. There’d been many times Dante heard her mother talk about who she felt Amalee should be with. He’d made them believe he was screening suitors for her when he was keeping them away. She’d promised to tell them about their relationship once she took the crown, but they never made it that far.

The year before she turned twenty-one, she begged her mother to send her away for school. She pleaded with them, saying she would never get another opportunity to live free once her ascension happened.

He didn’t think the King and Queen would agree, so when she left, telling him she needed to do this, and not to wait for her, his heart shattered into a million pieces.

She cut off all communication with him. Not a word or letter was sent. When she returned, seven months later, she had changed. Keeping his distance, he tried to avoid any awkward moments, but his heart still ached for her.

Then one night, the magnetism they shared could no longer be avoided. They fell into each other’s arms, not caring who found out – at least he thought that until the Onyx Queen saw them. Amalee panicked and pulled away. She told him she couldn’t keep falling into him and that it was time she acted like a Queen and found a suitable partner – a suitable partner not being him.

Sipping the drink in front of him, his mind strayed to her curves. When she’d come back from school, she was even more beautiful than before. Her body was soft and full in all the right places. Just thinking about her caused his dick to twitch.

“Constable?” Commander Gentry seemed shocked to find him sitting at the bar with a drink.

“What is it, Commander?”

“Is everything all right? I’m not used to seeing you here at this time of night, much less with a drink in your hand.”

“I just needed to clear my head.”

“Ah,” the commander pulled out the stool next to him and sat down, “I see.”

Looking over his nearly empty glass, “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Women troubles. I’ve seen it too many times before. Which lucky lady has you drinking alone in the middle of the night?”

Slamming back the rest of his liquor, “You’re mistaken, Commander. There’s no woman. I’ll see you in the morning.”

Dante started toward the door before the Commander called out to him, “Constable.”

Dante looked over his shoulder, “Yeah?”

“If she has you this tied up, it’s probably worth fighting for.”

Sighing, “It’s not that simple.”

“Real love usually isn’t.”
