Chapter 5

Amalee paced the library as she stared at the pile of books in the center of the floor. The journal had to be in the castle. She wouldn’t accept that someone had taken it from the castle.

“Wow, look at this mess.”

Amalee blinked, shocked to see Onika standing in the doorway.

“Do you have something against literary work?”

“Ha, ha. Why are you here, Onika?”

“I felt bad about yelling at you, I wanted to come and help you look… but I see you already got a head start. Unless you’re just redecorating.”

“It’s not here.”

“I figured since all the books were on the floor and not on the shelves.”

Amalee ran her fingers through her hair, tugging them in frustration, “I should have just read the damn thing when I got it.”

“Look, shit happens. Let’s just keep looking.”

Amalee hung her head, pinching her nose between her eyes, “Thank you for being here.”

“Amalee,” Onika narrowed her eyes, “Are you ok?”

Jerking her head up, “Of course, why?”

“I don’t know… Something’s different.”

“Don’t be silly,” she waved her hands in the air, “I’m the same old me. Where’s that hunk of yours?”

“Luca is speaking with the Constable and Commander.”

“Why?” her voice cracked, causing Onika to raise a brow.

“Oh,” Onika smirked, “I see what the problem is… you and the Constable still aren’t speaking, are you?”

Amalee dropped to the leather chair, throwing her hands up, “Onika, I’ve fucked up.”

Onika sat in the chair opposite her, “The journal will turn up, Amalee.”

“It’s not that… I didn’t tell you guys everything that the letter said.”

“I imagine you had an excellent reason,” Onika leaned back, watching her cousin closely.

“That’s it? You don’t want to yell at me?”

“I didn’t tell anyone what I was struggling with until I was ready, so I won’t judge you. I know you well enough to know that if it had something to do with the rest of us, you’d have said something, am I right?”

“Yeah…”

“So… what aren’t you telling me, Amalee?”

“I… I’ve been keeping a secret, and the letter has threatened to expose me.”

“Can’t you just come clean – and not let something be hanging over your head?”

“It will ruin everything, Onika. I can’t…” Amalee struggled to keep her tears in.
