“I have a question for you,” she said.

“Do you want a firearms lesson?” He asked.

“No, not today,” she said.

“What’s your question?” He started cleaning up his shell casings to throw them in the plastic paint bucket they collected them in.

“When my movie comes out in four months there will be a big premier party in Hollywood. Red carpet and all that,” she said. “I’d like to know if you would go with me as my escort, my date.”

He placed his gun down on a table and gave her his full attention. “You’re asking me on a date?”

“Well, yes,” she said. “I am.”

“This one of those black-tie affairs?’ he asked. “Tux and all that?”

“Yes it is,” she said. “Tux and all that.”

He nodded, thinking. “Yes, I’ll be your date for the evening.”

“Good,” she smiled.

“It’s months away,” he said. “In the meantime, about that lesson. . . Do you know how to clean a gun?”

“No,” she shook her head.

“I’ll show you how I clean mine.”

“Okay.” She was elated he’d said yes. It would be a fun evening when they went to the premier.

He showed her how he cleaned his gun and then, as he put it all back he said, “Four months is a long way off. No need to wait that long for a date. How about a movie this Saturday night?”

“I’d love that,” she said. “What’s on out here in the boonies?”

“I don’t know yet and they change it on Friday nights if they’re going to change it.”

“Okay, so Saturday night mystery movie,” she said. “I can’t wait.”

The first weekwent by and nothing bad had happened to Marilyn. Not since she’d arrived at the Patterson Ranch.

She began to relax and think that Tony might have forgotten about her. He probably had a new girl now, or girls.

When Sadie offered her the use of a car to run errands, she decided to take her up on it. Driving would give her that feeling of normalcy that she’d been missing, a feeling like she had some control over her life again.

She headed to town by herself to do some shopping. She wanted something nice to wear on their movie date. In a cute boutique she found a new sundress and sandals that fit nice and made her feel pretty, so she bought them.

Sometimes a woman just wanted to feel pretty.

She liked them so much, she decided to wear them back to the ranch.

On the way back to the ranch the car began to lump along, and she realized it had a flat tire.

Oh, this was not good.

It would leave her stranded on the side of the road, a long stretch of road which had no houses or businesses nearby. She sat in the car and looked around her.

Nothing here but mountains. The Crazy Mountains. Great.
