She looked down at the new cell phone she’d just bought today.

No service.

Cell service was hit or miss out here. Sadie had told her that. She sighed.

Of all the luck. What next?

It was hot out, so she rolled down the windows and got out of the car. She walked to a nearby tree to stand in the shade and looked every direction wondering how long it would be until someone came along. Till then, she was stuck here.

A car was coming her way, she saw it in the distance and stood up as it got closer, her arm and her hopes up, ready to wave them down.

But as the car got closer, it looked more and more familiar.

This wasn’t someone who would stop to help her with a flat. The car was Tony’s and Cleo was driving.

Oh no! He found me!

She turned and ran away from the road into the trees at the base of the mountain as the car pulled up behind the Patterson’s car and two men got out.

Bang!

A shot rang out behind Marilyn.

She threw a glance over her shoulder as she ran.

Tony had somehow found her, tracked her here and now he and his goon would kill her. There was no way he’d allow her to live.

She ran, uphill, in her new sundress and sandals, tripping over tree trunks and downed limbs, trying not to fall, as her feet scrambled for purchase in the slippery new shoes. She was not even trying to be quiet, in her panic.

If the men were close enough behind her they would hear her and know exactly where she was.

Storm clouds moved in overhead, hiding the sun and making the world turn darker.

Thunder crashed.

She fell. Flat. Having tripped over a tree root.

For a second, she lay there, the wind knocked out of her.

Below her, on the mountain, she heard Tony shout, “To the right! Up there!” He must’ve been pointing. “I heard her!”

Chapter 7

They were coming for her!

Something went rushing up the mountain and then ran past her. As she turned her head to look, she saw the white tail of a deer.

“Just a deer,” Cleo called to Tony.

Something else was moving on the mountain, to her left, below.

“Over there,” Cleo called. “I hear something.”

“That’s her,” Tony yelled. “Go get her!”

She heard the men start moving that direction and debated whether to stay where she was or to run.

They were moving toward whatever was below her.
