“We can’t kill the demons though.” He brushes my hand away. “They won’t die until the underworld is fixed. Is it worth us getting injured to save them for tonight when they might die tomorrow at the hands of the same demons?”
He has a fucking point and I hate it. I can’t just keep going, though, when I can help them for now.
“For fuck’s sake, Jayden,” Raven shouts. “I will fucking risk it. We are heroes, remember?”
“Fucking shit, you two are a couple bleeding hearts,” Jayden grumbles but stops the car and puts it in park. “We need a plan, though. We can’t let the humans see us.”
There’s a burnt-out car behind the group of demons and I point to it. “If we circle back, we can get behind that car and take out the demons from afar. It might give the humans an opportunity to escape.”
“What if they don’t try to escape, Beth?” Jayden crosses his arms over his chest. “What if they just go about looting and fighting?”
“If they don’t escape, it’s on them, but I can’t just watch them die if I can help.” I glare at him.
Raven sticks her head between the seats. “I think it’s as good a plan as any, but you may want to stop crackling with electricity while you argue.”
I peer down at my hands and the blue electricity is zapping across my fingers. “Shit.”
Taking steadying breaths, I calm my anger. Jayden isn’t wrong in his assessments, but he isn’t right either. We have an obligation as beings stronger than them to protect them when we can and I take that seriously.
“Don’t leave anything in the car,” Jayden barks at us as he opens the door.
I shoulder both bags and open my door, getting out. I have a firm grip on my whip just in case. It’s probably not the most common weapon in these streets, but it’s a lot better than wielding my sword. That would draw some stares.
“No swords,” I whisper as we crouch behind Jayden’s car. “They are too conspicuous.”
“And your whip isn’t?” Raven raises a brow at me.
Jayden has obviously had enough of this because he races to the car in question, crouched low so no one can see him from the brawl that has gotten bigger since we have been talking.
“Are they rounding up the humans? It looks like there are even more demons in the group now.” I frown over at Raven who shrugs before following Jayden’s lead.
Adrian follows close behind and I take up the rear. I’m just about across the street when pain shoots up my scalp and I yelp. Someone is yanking on my hair.
“Look what we have here,” a gruff voice says too close to my back. Putrid breath hits my neck in a hot wave and I nearly gag.
This fucker is too close. “Let me fucking go.”
He pulls me up by my hair and spins me around to face him. I curse internally, finding a human instead of a demon standing before me with a sleazy smile on his face.
“Are you a dominatrix chick or do you like pain?” His eyes glitter with heat and I scan my surroundings.
I know what a guy like this is after among chaos like this and it’s nothing good for me.
“I don’t want to hurt you, but I will if you don’t let me fucking go,” I growl.
Can I use my magic on him if it’s to save me from him? Or should I just use my whip and kick his ass?
The disgusting man laughs and steps closer to me. “You have a bite, do you? I like it when they fight me.”
Arms like a vise wrap around me from behind and I realize my mistake seconds too late. This man isn’t alone. He has friends and their sights are set on me. Fuck.
My arms are glued to my sides as the giant at my back squeezes me tight so I can’t move.
“You really don’t want to fucking test me, assholes,” I grumble, keeping my voice low so I don’t draw anymore unwanted attention to myself.
“Test, no. But fuck? Yes, that is exactly what we are going to do,” the sleazy man in front of me says with a sneer.
He steps in my space and I wiggle as best I can to get my free hand behind me and call on my magic. The electricity comes out of my hand like a force of wind and zaps the man behind me in the thigh.
