“What the fuck,” he yelps, releasing my arms and taking a step back. His jeans are charred. The smell of burnt flesh fills the air.
Gods, that’s disgusting.
I ready my whip, noticing we have a crowd forming, and I curse.
Where are the others? Did they not notice I’m not with them? Rude.
“You’re a freak. What the fuck was that?” the man with the charred pants roars.
“Doesn’t matter. Now you should know not to fuck with me.” I widen my legs and crouch into a fighting stance, flicking my whip at anyone who comes close.
The crowd parts as something jostles them and the man with the charred pants gets shoved to the side. Jayden is there with rage in his eyes and his shadows writhing over his arms.
“I thought we weren’t drawing attention to ourselves.” He crosses his arms over his chest and scans the crowd.
“Not my fault. I was attacked.” I rub at the back of my head and Jayden catches the movement. “Plus, you’re one to talk.”
I glance at his arms pointedly. Jayden’s eyes widen and he sighs. “Let’s go.”
“Oh no, you don’t, pretty boy. She’s mine.” The man who grabbed my hair sneers, taking a threatening step toward Jayden.
“You see what she did to your friend there and still you think you have any chance in hell of taking her on? You deserve what you’re about to get.” Jayden smirks.
“Jayden, no.” I barely get the words out before he unleashes his chains on the man and the crowd gasps before running away in all directions.
“You thought she was a freak; she’s got nothing on me.” He grins but it’s dark and menacing.
The chains of shadows snap out at the sleazy man and he screams as Jayden directs them to lift him off the ground.
The man’s face turns purple as he’s lifted. Jayden’s ice-blue eyes swirl with black as the shadows leak off him again. He’s losing control.
“Jayden, it’s fine. I’m okay. Let’s just go.” I take a step toward him, but he doesn’t seem to hear me over his rage.
The man chokes behind me, and I peer over just in time to see him clawing at the shadows as he’s about to lose consciousness.
“Jayden,” I say again and put my hand on his chest over his heart. Unnatural eyes glance down at me. “It’s okay. Let him down.”
He shakes his head but his eyes start to clear. The shadows pooling at his feet recede and the man drops to the pavement with a thud.
“You are both a couple freaks,” the man yells through a coughing fit as he jumps up and sprints away.
“C’mon, the demons probably know we are here.” He sighs, pulling away from me. “You still want to save these people?”
“We can’t base humanity off one disgusting asshole.” I shake my head and follow close behind him.
Jayden scoffs but doesn’t comment.
We round the burnt-out car. Raven and Adrian are huddled together watching the demons.
“What took you so long?” Raven whispers with a frown.
“Sorry to hold you up, but I was just getting attacked by slimy fucking humans. Thanks,” I snark back at her.
“What?” She moves to stand, but I pull her back down.
“We took care of it. Now, quiet.” I shake my head, already anticipating what she’s about to say. “They are gone, Raven. Drop it.”
“Fine,” she grumbles, glaring at Jayden.
