Jayden sits a little straighter. “They are running away from demons. Only I don’t think they can see them.”
“That makes everything exceedingly more complicated.” I chew my lip nervously and reach up to my necklace but stop. I don’t want my whip out yet.
Raven gasps, “They are feasting on humans who can’t see them? What do they think is after them?”
“I don’t know,” Jayden grumbles. “They probably think it’s other humans.”
My stomach rolls at the thought. They think they are being cannibalized. That is disgusting.
Jayden turns down a street. The red glow is stronger and fires are breaking out.
“Shit, are they looting?” Raven asks, pointing out the window again.
A hundred or so people pile out of an electronics store with large boxes and anything they can carry.
“It looks that way. What the fuck?” I shake my head.
Demons attack and everyone loses their damn minds.
A building to the left is burning bright; the heat of the flames is on my window as I reach my hand out to touch it. “Is that normal fire? I can feel the heat on my window.”
It just doesn’t seem normal. Can demons create a different kind of fire than humans have? Is this all a part of the humans’ need for destruction and violence when faced with the unknown?
Jayden leans over me to look out my window. We are going too slow now because of all the people in the street. “It’s not hellfire, that’s for sure.”
Raven shakes her head. “Humans are weird.”
“You’re half-human,” I remind her with a smirk.
“Yeah, but I’m not like that. None of us are,” Raven replies.
Jayden sighs. “We aren’t but we know some demigods who would get scared and do stupid shit.”
He’s not wrong. I can think of a couple off the top of my head. Dax would run in half-cocked and try to save everyone and Mia flew into a jealous rage and tried to fight the Nemean lion.
“That’s the truth,” Raven grumbles.
“We are almost there but with people all over the street, it’s taking too long.” Jayden shakes the steering wheel.
“Can you honk at them to get them out of the way?” I suggest.
“I don’t want to draw unwanted attention.” Jayden runs a hand through his short blond hair. “The humans might try to steal the car and the demons… Well, let’s just try to get through the demons with as little fight as possible.”
“True. I don’t want to fight any demons unless I have to.”
Raven points ahead of us. “Um, Beth? We are probably gonna have to.”
I turn in the direction she’s pointing and grimace. A group of huge grotesque creatures are standing around a group of humans in a circle.
The bright flames flicker over their leathery skin, making them almost glow in the dim light. Red piercing eyes watch the humans fighting each other.
One demon swipes out a clawed hand at the nearest human making his blood splatter and ripping at his shoulder. The man spins on the person closest to his back and attacks.
“They really can’t see the demons and are about to get slaughtered. We have to help.” I touch the lightning bolt at my neck and my whip unrolls in my hand.
Jayden eyes me warily. “Are you sure about this? The humans look violent themselves. This could turn ugly.”
“Jayden, we have to.” I rest my hand on his arm. “They are getting slaughtered.”
