Lucien
How the fuck did she move so fast?
The fact that she didn’t, but I was too busy thinking with my dick, was not lost on me. I just chose to ignore it. Grinding my teeth, I impotently watched my mate step out of the room, the bright glow of the yellow light blinding me for a long moment. I blinked fast to clear my vision before she did something stupid like attacking the witch with nothing but her bare hands. I might’ve only known her for a short while, but Viola was a stubborn and fearless female. A little too brave, if you’d ask me. If it was anyone else but her, I would’ve called them an idiot. Since it was my mate, not even I dared utter the word.
“Let her go.” Viola’s voice sounded firm and confident. If I didn’t know how fucked we were, I would’ve thought she didn’t see the witch as a threat. “And if you fling more of that laser crap at me, you’ll be chasing me a long time, just so you know.”
“If you don’t want her or Melody hurt, you’ll come to me right now.” The witch sneered, and my eyebrows dipped low over my eyes.
Melody?
A cold shiver slithered down my spine, and I went numb all over. Did the witch get her hands on my brother’s mate again? How was that possible? Étienne would’ve ripped my throat out of I placed one finger on the Muse, so unless he was dead, I couldn’t see how she might have been in the cursed place. I made sure no one was coming behind my mate’s back by inching closer to the now fully opened door.
The hallway was empty for as far as I could see.
“Where is Melody?” Viola was a smart female and picked up on the same thing.
“She is otherwise occupied. Should I do the same to this one for you to obey?” The witch was good. If I didn’t feel my brother through our bloodline to assure myself he was indeed alive, I would’ve bought her lies.
“What did you do to her?” the satin of the long dress whispered when my mate took a step forward. I had to grind my teeth not to roar at her to get behind the walls so I could fight the witch.
Desperately I looked around, searching for something I could use to distract the magic wilder so I can snatch Viola without her getting hurt. My eyes landed on the wall that had a hole in a shape of a body in the middle of it where I punched through it shoulder first. I had to struggle with my urge to simply walk out and face the vile creature who thought she was better than everyone because she could steal someone else’s powers. If I could render her mute so she couldn’t chant her spells, she’ll be more useless than a human. The problem with witches was they were so used to their chants, throwing them at anyone they pleased, that it was second nature to the magic wielders. To those not in the know, it would seem they manipulated magic with thought alone.
I knew better.
An idea formed in my mind, and I slinked toward the hole in the wall and stepped through it. Taking a lesson from the fucking cat, I tiptoed over debris and broken pieces of furniture until I found myself three rooms down. I could still hear my mate bickering with the witch, but her voice came from further down. The witch, however, sounded closer. Much, much closer.
“Come, and I will show you what I did to her. She will live. You have my word.” I almost snorted at the sincerity, which she didn’t need to fake. Melody would live because Étienne was going to make sure of it, not because the witch gave her word.
Too bad you can’t say the same about your own mate. That time I heard my molar crack, and I wished I had the power to physically strangle the voice taunting me in my head. My mate was going to live if it was the last thing I did. Which very well may be if the witch got me with one of her magic attacks.
“Let Harmony go first, then I’ll come without a fight.” My mate said conversationally. “Or, you can keep chasing me around this building. Too bad I didn’t know sooner how big this place was.”
“Where is your friend?” I froze with my hand reaching for the door.
“My friend? You meanyourfriend?” confusion almost knocked me on my ass. Say what now? “If you are talking about that freaky guy you sent to my prison cell, you can find him in one of the rooms… I think. That’s where he was last I saw him when I knocked his ass unconscious with a lamp. Nice try to trick me with a pretty face. I’ll tell you that much.”
“Is that so?” the witch sounded too intrigued, which didn’t bode well for neither of us. I raked my brain on what to do. “You knocked him out? I do not believe you.”
I debated if I should see what Viola had in mind. If she could turn the situation in our favor, and I’d take her lead until we were out of here. Or listen to the instincts that were screaming at me to protect my mate. I had no intention of admitting that moment of indecision to anyone, least of all to one of my brothers.
The female would be the death of me.
“I don’t care. You can believe whatever you want, that’s not my problem, it's yours. You already have me doing whatever you want. I have no idea why you felt the need to send a guy to interrogate me. What did you think? I’m a fifteen year old girl that will swoon when I see a hottie?” Viola snorted ungracefully, and despite the dare situation we were in, my lips twitched.
“What did he want to know?” I couldn’t believe my ears that the witch bought it.
“Why are you asking me? You sent him.”
My skin prickled from the charge in the air coming from the small gap around the door. It wasn’t familiar, but I had no doubt the witch was somehow testing if my mate was telling the truth. Carefully I took a few steps back in case she could feel my presence near her.
“Vi, don’t listen to her. Please run.” The other female spoke in a raw tone as if she’d just woken up. As soon as she was done talking, she screamed, and my mate shouted something I couldn’t hear.
“You stay quiet, or I’ll melt the skin off your bones.” The witch snapped, her voice full of rage. “Don’t you dare, Viola. I will kill her.”
“Let her go, Seraphina. Harmony has nothing to do with this. I tried to run. It was me, not her.”
