“Why did you? How far did you think you would go?”

“The guy scared me.” my mate kept up with her lie. “I was preparing to run from him anyway, but then you came, and I have no idea what happened. That awful sound made me feel like I was going crazy, so I saw the opened door and took off. He caught me though, as you know until I whacked him with a lamp. The rest is history.”

I hoped Viola struggling in my arms for me to put her down so she could run on her own two feet, looked like she was fighting me to the witch.

“I didn’t send him to interrogate you.” The magic wilder spoke tentatively after a while. “He and his brothers have been trying to steal you from me for a while now.” So she knew who we are, interesting. I wasn’t sure if she just knew about Étienne and me or she was aware of Moël too and who we really were. “If you think you have it bad here with me, that’s nothing compared to what will happen to you if they get their hands on you. Melody barely survived it, and she regrets not listening to me, don’t be a fool.”

“You are so sweet.” Viola gushed before speaking in a deadpan tone. “I don’t need a bit of boy advice from you. Now, if you want me to come there, let Harmony go.”

“How long do you think you can keep this up?” the witch was done playing, and I was an idiot for standing like a lump in the middle of the room instead of ripping the witch’s throat.

“Harmony, remember in eighth grade what you did when I tried to take your Cello?” my mate ignored the witch.

“Yeah?” the other female breathed the word like a question.

“Stop it this instant. Come here, Viola, before I kill you both.” The magic wheilder snarled. “I should’ve known you are feisty one and the trouble maker of the group.”

She had that one right.

My chest puffed up with pride before a could catch what I was doing.

Then I glared.

“You think I’m feisty?” Viola took me, and obviously the witch as well, by surprise when she burst into peals of laughter. My tense body relaxed, and I nearly dripped when I sagged where I stood. “You lady obviously haven’t seen Harmony when you push your luck. My girl lets you do all that because she’s dumb, thinking she is protecting Melody and me. But your jig us up, I’m afraid.”

“You little…”

“Harmony, now,” Viola yelled, jerking me out of the daze I was in.

There was a loud thump, and the witch screamed with a shrill sound. I tensed to move for the door. Through the hole in the walls, I noticed a shadow pass a few rooms up. When my head turned, my gaze met the emerald eyes of my mate, wide and panicked. She was gathering her skirt in her hands and bolted toward me with her mouth pressed in a firm line. I rushed to meet her halfway, but before I could reach her, the door of the room between us exploded into million splinters.

Pieces of wood embedded themselves into the exposed skin of my face and neck while Viola wrapped her arms around her head to protect her face. For a split second, a thought came to the forefront of my mind that whoever it was that walked past the door where we were hiding never made an appearance while the witch faced my mate. It vanished when the scent of Viola’s blood saturated the air and made me lightheaded.

“Stop this instant.” The witch screamed, and a lash of magic hit the floor, barely missing my mate’s foot.

“Fuck you.” Viola hissed, spun around, and ran in the direction where she came from. I paused, waiting for the magic wielder to step in where I could see her.

“I will kill you, you little bitch.” The witch rushed into the room, her back to me. “You and the other two abominations.”

Her arm cocked back, bright orange magic swirling around her fingers, pulsing with its own heartbeat.

Fangs bared, I pounced.
