Even with the love of your life?
I pushed that thought out of my head while heading to my car. Although I told my mind not to think about him, I couldn’t help but have my mind wander a bit. Remy Delgado was the one for me. He was that man who would make me feel good in every way: spiritually, emotionally, and definitely physically. There were times when I would think about his hands over my body, the way his lips would trace the outlines of my curves to the sacred place between my thighs. He was my person, and no one had ever been on his level regarding relationship material.
So, why did I leave him? There were several reasons but mainly because he wasn’t ready to be in a relationship. He only cared about his business ventures, which made me feel alone sometimes. I knew it was in his best intentions to build his business because he was securing his future, but it was hurting us in the process. As much as I wanted to support him, I couldn’t keep feeling neglected either.
I waited in my car for a few minutes, taking in the scenery around me and thinking about Remy. I tried not to think about him, but there were times when I couldn’t help myself.
I suddenly jumped as the sound of my phone going off, interrupting my thoughts. I glanced at the unfamiliar number, wondering who it was as I slowly answered it.
“Porsha Baxter.”
“Yes, hi Ms. Baxter. This is Cierra from Oxford Publishing House. I was calling regarding the editor position that you’d applied for recently.”
“Yes, hi Cierra,” I quickly replied.
This was the phone call I was waiting on. I’d been applying for various positions since I had an extensive work background, but being an editor was my ultimate dream. I always wanted to edit books, but I also wanted to dabble in writing as well. I figured if I became an editor, then someone could also look at my stories to see if they were worth a shot to publish. I never told anyone this, but Remy…
“Are you there, Ms. Baxter?”
I went back to business mode, realizing I needed to stop thinking about him as I replied to Cierra, “Yes, sorry. My phone signal must have dropped.”
“No worries. But we were very impressed with your portfolio as well as your interview, and we would love to extend an offer for you with Oxford.”
“Are you serious! Yes, yes, I would gladly accept it.”
Cierra chuckled. “I’m glad you’re ecstatic. That’s what we love to have at Oxford.”
As Cierra gave me the details of my first day, I was beyond ecstatic. I felt as if I was floating from the good news. I looked around, wondering if I should go celebrate getting my dream job. I called my bestie, Chandra, to give her the good news. Chandra and I had been friends since elementary and we’d been inseparable ever since. We’d seeneach other’s ups and downs, so I knew she’d be just as excited for me.
“Hey, girlie, what’s up?”
“You’ll never guess what happened?”
“You won the lottery?”
“I wish. But even better. I got my dream job.”
“The editor position?! Congratulations! When do you start?”
“Tomorrow. I thought it would be later this week, but I guess they desperately need someone.”
“Isn’t that a good thing? Now, you won’t steady be asking me for money.”
“Ha, ha.”
“We should go celebrate.”
“I was thinking the same thing. At our favorite spot?”
“You know it. Meet you there in 20.”
We disconnected, as I headed to Escada’s for happy hour. I figured we could get started now since I had to get an early start the next day. I arrived within 10 minutes as I was close by and went inside to retrieve our favorite table. I noticed Chandra already seated, which surprised me.
“How did you beat me here?”
“Girl, I was already here.”
I shook my head as I sat down. “You could had given me a heads up.”
