Fucking nowhere.
There was a knock at the door as I told the person to enter. April walked in with a smile and a coffee cup in her hand. She sat the cup down on the desk and asked if I needed anything else. I shook my head and told her to leave, which she abruptly did.
I went to my desk to pick up the cup, noticing it wasn’t hot like I wanted. I specifically asked for a steaming hot vanilla latte every morning and, of course, she couldn’t do it. I took a sip of the lukewarm drink and immediately spit it out, some of it landing on my suit jacket.
“Fuck!”
The door opened, and April panickily ran into the room. “Is everything okay?”
“No, it’s not! How long have you been here?”
“Only a few weeks, Mr. Delgado.”
“And what have you done correctly in the last few weeks?”
“I don’t understand, Mr. Delgado.”
“Since you can’t answer that, let me. Everything that I have asked of you, you have not done anything correctly. In fact, your work ethic has been piss poor, so I suggest you go pack your things and find another job because you’re no longer employed here.”
“Excuse me?”
“I think you heard me correctly. Good day, April. And make sure to return your key card to security, please.”
“But I—”
“Good day, April.”
Before she could say anything else, I slammed the door in her face. I knew I shouldn’t have done that. My mom raised me better than that, but I couldn’t take anymore of her incompetence. It was overwhelming.
I went to my desk, realizing that I no longer had an assistant. I ran my hand through my dark hair and sighed. I could stand doing some things on my own for a few days, right? Hell, I was a muthafucking owner of my own corporation. If I could handle a multimillion deal, then I surely could pour my own cup of coffee.
My desk phone began ringing as I stared at it, wondering if it was the call I’d been waiting for. I quickly answered it, praying that I was going to get some good news.
“Delgado, speaking.”
“Hey, Remy. I was expecting to hear from your assistant,” Henry Broussard said.
I smiled, wondering if the man from one of the top publishing houses was going to tell me what I wanted to hear but, instead, gave me small talk about my assistant who was nonexistent now.
“She’s taking a break right now. But, what can I do for you, Henry? I hope it’s good news to why you’re calling.”
“It depends on how you take it, once we meet up to discuss it.”
“Anytime you’re ready, boss.”
As I got the details of the meeting location, I hung up with a smile. I think my day was quickly turning around for the better.
CHAPTER 2
Porsha
I
really need to find a job…
I walked out of the third staffing agency for today, completely exhausted since I’d been on an extensive job search since this morning. I wasn’t just tired physically but emotionally as well. I never realized that looking for a job was a job in itself, but I hoped I’d be able to find one soon.
Throughout my life, I have always been a go-getter. From receiving the best grades to landing the best jobs, I had been an overachiever and wouldn’t want anything less. If my life was not how I wanted it, I’d quickly change it, plain and simple, including my relationships. I didn’t want to feel tied down or have to feel a man should help me. I was my own woman; I made the rules of my life, and that’s how it would always be.
