“But Hailey, I’m hungry,” Devyn whines.
I place my hand on Hailey’s arm. “Hailey it’s fine, we have some leftover meatloaf with sides. You’re not imposing and if GeeGee, you’ll meet her, if she finds out we didn’t bring you two in to eat, she will have a fit. So, please come in and save us from her wrath.” She finally gives in, then she and Devyn follow me back into the house.
“GeeGee! Janae! We have company,” I call out as we walk towards the kitchen.
“This time of night? Who is it,” GeeGee ask, rounding the corner from the den with Janae behind her? They stop when the see Hailey and Devyn.
“This is Hailey and her little sister, Devyn. They were with the women being held at Trent’s club,” I let them know. “Hailey and Devyn, this is GeeGee and Janae. Devyn is hungry, so I thought we could warm up some of the leftovers for her.”
GeeGee looks sad as she says, “Yes, yes of course. Come on baby.” She holds out her hand to Devyn. Devyn looks at Hailey who smiles then nods for her to go. Devyn shyly walks over to GeeGee and take her hand. “Aren’t you the cutest little thing. How old are you, sweetheart?”
“Twelve,” Devyn whispers as GeeGee takes her into the kitchen. She’s just a baby!
Curious, I ask Hailey, “Hailey, you don’t have to tell us but how did you two end up at Trent’s club?”
Hailey sighs. “Is there somewhere we can talk? I don’t want Devyn to hear all of this, all of this has been hard on her.”
“Yeah, let’s go back to the living room,” Janae says.
Once seated in the living room, Hailey states, “I found out my step-father had been abusing Devyn.” Tears form in her eyes.
“Oh, no,” Janae and I say at the same time.
“He used to do it to me when I was younger, but when I got older, I would fight him. I would tell my mother, but she never believed me. She would say it was all in my head. She just didn’t want to lose the money or street fame that came with being married to a street hustler. Then Devyn came along. When I lived at home, I always kept her close to me. I didn’t want him doing to her what he did to me.”
Her tears were really flowing now. I stand, then grab her some tissues. Handing them to her, I sit next to her and hold her free hand.
“Thank you,” she obliges, wiping her eyes. “Devyn called me three nights ago, crying in the phone and I instinctively knew he did something to her. The asshole touched my baby sister, his own flesh and blood. I had to get her away from him and my mother because I knew she wasn’t going to help her. So, I picked her up from school the next day. I knew they would look for my car, so I ditched it some blocks away from the bus station. I bought us some tickets to California. We had a layover here and that’s when that asshole’s men grabbed us.”
“Where are you originally from,” I ask.
“Atlanta, Georgia”
“Wow, you guys have been riding for a while,” Janae murmurs, shaking her head.
Hailey blows her nose, then says, “Yeah, it’s been hell but I endure it to keep Devyn safe.”
I pat her knee. “Well, you’re both safe now. Both of you look like you can use a good night and day’s rest. Once you’ve gotten that, then you can decide what you want to do next.”
GeeGee strolls in with us. “Hailey, come on in the kitchen and get something to eat.”
“I’m fine Ms. GeeGee. I’m not really hungry.”
GeeGee raises her brow. “Girl, you better get in here and eat. That baby in there eating like she hasn’t had a proper meal in days, so I know you’re hungry, too.”
Hailey eyes widen. I lean over and whisper, “You better go eat or GeeGee will drag you in there and force you to eat.”
Hailey glances at me then Janae who hums, “Mmmhmm. Come on, I’ll go with you. I could use a snack before my husband comes to pick me up.”
“Oh, your husbands not here with those guys,” Hailey asks, standing.
“No, he owns the security company you guys were taken to first,” Janae replies, standing as well.
Hailey stares at her in shock. “You mean the big scary guy with the tattoos?”
Janae giggles. “That would be the one. He just looks scary, he’s really a teddy bear, that is until you piss him off.”
As they begin to leave out of the room, I rise from my seat and tell them, “Hey, I’m going to check on the guys. I’ll be back in a few minutes.” They nod, then continue to the kitchen.
