“No, no, no,” I said, shaking my head and looking at the building. “I couldn’t. It’s too embarrassing. I was at a low point in my life…”
“Yes, you can,” he said, grasping both my hands in his and gazing into my eyes. “I know you’ve wanted this for a long time, sweetheart. You want your own money and the career that you fought to have. You’ve become stronger now. Go in there and tell her that you want your job back.”
I took in a deep breath.
He was right. I did want this job, even though it was long hours and hard work. I wanted to be the top doctor and work my ass off.
"You should have told me we were coming here. I would have worn something professional," I said.
He looked down, realizing his mistake. "I'm sorry about that. I should have known better, but you'll still get your job back either way."
“How about Lio, though?”
“He’ll be perfectly fine,” said Jatix. There will always be someone at home to watch him, especially lazy Silus. He’s lazy but makes a great alpha father.”
“You all are amazing fathers,” I corrected.
“Now, are you ready to go in there?”
“Oh shit,” I said, clenching his hands tight. “Yes, let’s do this.”
As we walked into the hospital, we passed by the patients in the waiting area and headed up the stairs toward the director’s office. Lucia was the last person I wanted to see, but Jatix was with me. And that gave me the strength I needed.
The large redwood door looked intimidating, but I took another deep breath. I knocked two times, dreading facing her again.
“Yes?” she called. I opened the door and steeled myself, walking into the room with purpose. “Oh, it’s you.”
Then she saw Jatix walking in behind me, and her eyes bugged out. She stood up and offered him a chair.
“I came to see about getting my job back. To get reinstated,” I said, getting straight to the point. If she refused, that was on her. I wouldn’t care after that, but at least I would try.
She started to smirk, and I could already see the refusal behind her eyes.
“Before you say anything,” said Jatix. “I would appreciate you giving my mate the respect she deserves.”
“Wait, what? She’s yourmate?!” said Lucia, shocked.
“Yes. She is the love of my life,” said Jatix. “So, how about that job?”
He stared her down, and she grew flustered.
“You can start on Monday,” said Lucia, sickly sweet, turning to me. “You can come in and start the paperwork then and start working effective Tuesday.”
Oh, my goodness. It worked.
“That sounds good. Thank you,” I said, shaking her reluctant hand. She shook Jatix’s hand without hesitation.
“Will we see you at the next donor meeting?” she asked him.
“It depends,” said Jatix, not guaranteeing anything. It sounded like a thinly veiled threat that he wouldn't give a penny if I were mistreated again.
As we walked out of the office, I couldn’t wait to celebrate with Jatix and the rest of my men. Jatix took my hand and squeezed it as we headed to the car.
“Congratulations on your new job,” said Jatix, kissing my hand.
“Thank you,” I said, giddy with excitement. “If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have had the courage.”
“It was all you,” said Jatix, kissing me in front of his car. I leaned against the car's hood and closed my eyes from the hot sun as he kissed me again.
