hope they saw the human part of her in that desire.” He gave a grim smile. “I did not tell them it was
safer for them if she danced first.”
Sabrina’s stomach did somersaults as she curtsied to the standing ovation she and the company
received for their performance. After seeing Theo, it had taken a bit to be able to concentrate on her
dancing, but she’d managed to forget about what awaited after.
Until now.
“Are you okay?” Jayson whispered as they moved backward on the stage. “You look pale.”
She forced a smile. “Tired, I guess. I miss Chase.”
Jayson chuckled. “He’ll be home soon.”
She nodded and smiled out to the audience, praying she’d be able to keep the contents of her
stomach down long enough to get back to the hallway where Theo waited for her. At last, the curtain
fell for the last time and she hurried to Ethan’s side.
He looked as good as she felt. “I don’t like the idea of you going there without me,” he whispered
as they turned a corner away from the other dancers. He put his arm around her and held her close.
“But I don’t think the Elders would appreciate me being there.”
“I don’t think Theo would take you, anyway.”
Ethan frowned but nodded. Their feet made no sound as they walked down the linoleum hallway.
“I can’t protect you if you’re not with me,” he said in a low voice, putting his hands on her shoulders.
His eyes were dark and full of concern.
“I will protect her, Ethan.” Theo’s deep voice made both of them jump. “I will do whatever is
necessary to keep her safe.”
Human and Immortal stared at each other for a long moment, before Ethan nodded. “I believe
you.”
Theo gave a small smile. “Chase said the same thing.”
Ethan let out a low chuckle. “That I believe as well.”
Theo turned to Sabrina. “We must go.” He waved his hand in the air and the surrounding air spun
for a moment. In the reflection of a rehearsal room window, she saw herself dressed in a simple
white gown. Her stage makeup was gone and her hair rolled down her back and chest in long waves.
“Much better.” He turned to Ethan. “I will return her to your home when we are done. Go home and
try to relax.”
