Theo gave a sharp nod and then disappeared in a flash of light.
Sabrina trembled and Ethan hugged her to his chest and she swallowed hard. “I couldn’t have let
Chase die,” she whispered.
“I know. They have to understand that.” But he didn’t sound very convincing.
Chase paced in his hotel room as Alex sat on the couch watching him. “You will wear out the carpet,”
the big German said.
Chase frowned. “I can’t sit.” He sighed and walked to the window. “If I knew what this was
about, maybe I could relax.”
“I understand.”
The room was silent until a whoosh and a bright flash of light made Chase turn. “Theo!”
“I should not be here,” he said, looking around. “But I wanted to let you know I was charged with

“I will protect her, Chase.” Theo’s voice was solemn. “You have my word.”
“I believe you.” Chase didn’t want harm to come to Sabrina in any form, but if she were
“removed from this world,” as Theo had said . . . How could he survive without the woman he
loved? If Theo took her because of the Elders, she wouldn’t be allowed back. He would take her to
keep from being killed. After all, in the past, Elders killed beings like her.
Alex walked over and put his hand on his shoulder. “Worrying will do no good.” He looked at
Theo. “What should we do while we wait?”
“Occupy yourselves. Distract yourself from negative thoughts. Trust me. Trust your Elders. They
will do what they can for her.”
Chase nodded, not able to speak over the lump in his throat.
Theo bowed his head. “I am sure Richard will let you know when the meeting is over. I let them
know she wished to fulfill her responsibility to finish her performance. They were not happy, but I
