“Men are not in my thought process right now.”
She took the cheese and poured it in the red sauce with onions, before transferring it on top of the fish.
“If this job is going to bring you danger, I think you need to look into other work. I’ll check at the post office.”
“That’s the last thing I should do is work alongside my mom.”
“Safer at my job.”
Mom lifted the plate of fried fish and handed it to me.
“Smothered fish smells good.”
Keys in the door dinged, and Dad came in whistling.
“Look at my two favorite women.”
“Hi, Dad.”
He kissed my mom on the neck and stepped around her to kiss me on the cheek.
“You look pretty, baby.”
“Thanks, how was work?”
Dad dropped the mail on the table.
“Long, but happy to be here and ready to eat.”
“Go change your clothes and wash up,” Mom said.
I grabbed the knife to cut into the fish and placed a small amount on each plate, and Mom set the bread on the table. A few seconds later, he came back to the kitchen and sat.
“Amelia, is everything good with you?”
Mom and I locked eyes.
“Everything is fine.”
Mom blurted out an annoyed noise.
.“What am I missing?” Dad watched me, and I pushed food around my plate.
“Nothing, to worry you guys about.”
Ring!
My cell phone rang, interrupting me.
“Hello,” I answered, pulling my phone from my jacket.
“Your guards are outside.”
“Aydin?”
“Don’t fight me on this.”
“Who told you where I am?” I whispered harshly through the phone.
