“Has to be serious if Dani called that you’d been staying at her place.”
“Just for the past two days. I needed to get my locks changed.”
“Amelia!” she gasped, grasping my hands.
“Don’t worry. My building is secure, and the cameras didn’t catch anyone inside the building that looked weird.”
“Maybe you should stay here.”
“No, it’ll blow over soon.”
“Well, how is work overall?”
“Work is great, and I love it actually.”
Mom released my hands and stood.
“Tell me about it while I finish dinner.”
“You remember I told you I work as an operations manager.”
“That’s a big position. I thought you applied for secretary.”
“I did and the office manager, Molly, gave me the position of assistant to the owner and operations manager.”
“How is your boss?”
She passed me a grater and a block of cheese. We stood at the counter together and talked.
“Different.”
“That sounds like you’re annoyed.”
“My first day he ignored me practically.”
“Ignored like dismissive.”
“Basically, and then he fired me.”
She stopped before she turned the fish over.
“Fired you, why?”
“Aydin’s in his own world. I think he wasn’t expecting someone to not buy into his bullshit.”
“Listen if he tries you again.”
“We’ve had a talk, and he’s apologized. That’s why I was surprised when he invited me to stay with him.”
“Stay as in his home?”
“Yeah, it surprised everyone.” I placed a piece of cheese in my mouth.
“Is he cute?”
“Mom.”
“What? Girl, I’m a woman first.”
