Chapter 19

Phoenix

“Stop jerking away Lola. For fuck’s sakes just stay still.” I didn’t have any patience tonight. My side was aching like a bitch. Just my luck the bullet was just low enough to get under my vest, but on the other hand at least it was far enough to the left that it missed my junk. I would live, but I needed some painkillers and had to sit down with Talon, Ash, and the club VP, Bones, to figure out what in the fuck we would do next. They now had a major dent in their group, which was just a major stroke of luck considering we’d been ambushed. But that could wait. I needed to deal with Lola first.

“I’m not trying to. It’s tender,” she protested, squirming a bit on the bathroom counter.

Motioning to my side, I replied, “Tell me about it.”

“Do you think it’ll scar?” She looked over her shoulder at her reflection in the mirror behind the sink.

I cringed, catching her gaze in the mirror. There was no doubt in my mind that it was going to leave a scar across her cheek. She was lucky that was the worst that happened to her; at least she didn’t have a big gaping hole in her face. It had been a very bad idea to allow her to go with us. There was no point to it at all. I should have stuck to my guns and insisted she stay.

“That bad huh?” she asked, reading my silence.

I shrugged. “Your first battle scar.”

Tears filled her eyes. “My career will definitely be over now.”

“Nah, you’re still as stunning as ever.” Grabbing a piece of gauze, I gently placed it over the wound and using surgical tape secured it in place. “I heard the scarred look is all the rage in Europe this season.”

She tore her gaze from mine in the mirror to look at me directly. “You’re a horrible liar.”

Chuckling, I lowered my lips to hers and gave her a gentle kiss. Despite the pain in my side, just the feel of her soft, moist lips against mine sprang my dick into action. At least that part of me was one hundred percent healthy.

Down boy. Unfortunately, I’d be out of commission for a few days at least.

“Okay, looks like you’re done.” Taking a step back, I gave her room to slide from the bathroom counter. “I’m sorry you don’t have any new clothing here. We’ll stop by my room on the way to the quarters you’ll share with Gabriella for now.”

“Why did you bring is back to the club house and not the cabin?”

“Because there’s no one looking for Gabriella now. We’ll go back to the cabin to get your stuff, just not now. We can do it tomorrow.”

She chewed at her lower lip. “Will I get to sleep with you and Ash tonight?”

I sighed, stroking my beard. Fucking thing needed to be trimmed again. “We’ll play it by ear. Tonight you’re better off staying with Gabriella, okay?”

“Okay.”

My heart sank a little.

With Lola secure in a room with Gabriella, I made my way to the meeting room at the far end of the main floor of the club house. Opening the heavy oak door that bore the emblem of our club, I hesitated in the doorway as I scanned the room. Cisco’s chair was vacant. It didn’t look or feel right to have it empty and the feeling punched me in the gut, hitting home. I swallowed down the lump beginning to form in my throat and entered the room, closing the door behind me.

“Brothers,” I greeted them, taking my spot across from Ash. Talon was seated at the head of the large table, which also had our emblem engraved on the top of the rich mahogany wood. To one side of him sat Bones, on the other would have been Cisco. My seat was beside the now-empty spot and Ash was across from me.

The nodded their greeting.

“I’m just going to get to it. We’ve lost Cisco; the coroner has come to pick him up and they are listing it as a heart attack and then cremating his remains. I’ve spoken to Cisco’s family and they will be compensated. It is certainly not a substitute for not having Cisco still alive, but it’s what we can do for now. At the very least they know that the people responsible for his death are no longer breathing.”

My brothers all nodded, but no one spoke.

Talon continued. “The mission was a failure in terms of achieving our goal of getting Lily off the hook for the drug charges; I still have to figure out how to tell her that. And we have the problem of Gabriella.”

“Should we just let her go?” Bones asked.

With a sigh, Talon leaned back in the high-backed wooden chair, lacing his fingers behind his head. “Raven is dead. We’ve pretty much destroyed their organization. If anyone was set to take over what is left then it would be Gabriella.”
