“Then make a deal. Her freedom for Lily’s. She’ll need to have someone come forward to take the fall.”

“Dunno.” Talon shook his head. “If we set her free there’s no guarantee that she’ll go back to what’s left of the club. There’s also no guarantee that she’ll make someone take the fall. We’d be relying on a woman who has about as many scruples as her husband did.”

“But we have something that might be important to her,” I said before I knew the words were coming from my mouth.

“Which is?” Talon leaned forward, eager to know where my thoughts were leading.

There was no turning back now… Sorry, Lola. “We have her twin sister. It may not amount to much, but it just might. She has no family; we all know that much. Lola seems to have already developed an attachment to her twin… Never know, if Gabriella is feeling the same way we can exploit it.”

Fuck, did I ever feel like a dick throwing the woman I was catching feelings for under the bus, but I had to think about the club. I owed Talon my life and I’d known Lily since she was a little girl. I had to right the wrong that was done; I could only hope Lola would forgive me.

Talon rubbed his chin, and after what felt like an eternity nodded his head. “It certainly couldn’t hurt. Any shot is better than no shot.”

I could feel Ash’s gaze burning into the side of my head, but I refused to look at him. It had to be done. Lola would be fine. It wasn’t like we were throwing her to the wolves or anything. She’d understand, I told myself again. They both would.

Lola

“I’m sorry about Raven.” Gabriella had been extremely quiet since we arrived. We’d been locked in the room together for close to an hour if I were to take a wager, with each of us sitting on a single bed, lost in our own thoughts.

Gabriella who’d been sitting up against the wall with her eyes closed, slowly opened her onyx eyes and stared at me for a moment. “Don’t be. I’m not.”

“He was your husband…”

She scoffed. “That doesn’t mean a thing. You saw that yourself tonight. He had no interest in my safe return. All he cared about was saving the face of the club. I didn’t have a boyfriend and he didn’t have a parade of mistresses because we were in love with each other.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. Not your problem.”

“What are you going to do now?” A number of scenarios had been running through my head. We may have just met, but she was my sister and I already felt a connection to her. I’d do what I could to help her. “Do you have a place to go?”

She smiled. “I’ll be going home. I’m not sure who exactly was taken out tonight, but if they planned an ambush and Raven is dead then that means most if not all of the officers are gone. I can go back to the club.”

“Are you sure?”

“Anyone that knows the plan to kill me off would already be dead. I’m quite certain I can go back and it’ll be fine.” She smirked. “This isn’t my first rodeo; you forget I’ve lived this way my entire life. If I can navigate living with a drug lord father then I can handle a bunch of bikers without a leader.”

Was she thinking of taking over where her husband left off? After hearing of all the heinous things their club was involved in it made me cringe, thinking she’d be wrapped up in or would even would facilitate such things.

“If Talon runs past you the option of my freedom in exchange for someone taking his daughter’s place, then assure him I’d be on board. I want this to be over so I can get on with my life. And I don’t really fucking care if someone in my club needs to take the fall.”

I didn’t have a chance to respond. The sound of footsteps echoing as they approached the door grabbed my attention moments before there was a click and the door swung open to reveal Ash, gun in hand and still wearing the bloody clothing he’d had on earlier. “Lola can you come with me please?”

I looked at Gabriella, who nodded and then leaned back against the wall and closed her eyes, resuming the position she’d been in before we began talking.

Unfolding my legs from under me, I slipped from the bed and joined Ash. I yearned to wrap my arms around his neck and have him hold me tight, but his cold demeanor was making it clear that this wasn’t the place or time. Hesitating before him, I brushed past his massive frame and into the hallway. After locking the door behind us, he slipped the gun back into the holster and then placed his hand at the center of my lower back and urged me forward.

Heat radiated from his hand, spreading throughout my core. So much had happened in the past twenty-four hours that I just needed the comfort he provided. Stopping in my tracks I spun to face him, brushing a strand of hair from my face that fell over my eyes.

Tilting my head up, I looked deep into his blue eyes. I loved that shade of blue; I could stand there staring into those beautiful orbs for hours. As if sensing what I needed, he slipped his arms around me and held me tight against his hard body. Sliding my arms around his neck, I placed my cheek against his shoulder and closed my eyes basking in his power.

“Are you okay? I know you’ve had a lot to digest,” he said, pulling away from me just enough so that he could look down into my eyes.

Giving him a rueful smile, I shrugged. “Let’s see: kidnapped, found out I had a twin sister, shot in the face and now…” My mind drifted a moment to the feelings I was beginning to feel for the man who had me wrapped up in his arms, and for Phoenix. They were real, definitely real, and they scared me shitless.

“Now…” It was as if he were waiting for me to say the words. There was definite affection in his gaze as well. Whoever said the eyes were the window to the soul was brilliant.
