“Screw you. I'm calling James instead.”
“Wait, wait, wait. I'm already on my way. I'll be there in a few, but yeah, call James for backup, just in case. He can bring a tranquilizer should she try to attack again.”
“James is not using a tranq on my mate.” I snarled.
“Calm down or else people are going to think she gave you rabies too.”
Before I could respond, he hung up on me.
This was a bad idea.
I tried to call it off but neither Austin nor James would answer the phone when I called.
When they didn't show, I started to get angry. Every time one of them called me for help, I dropped everything and went. It didn't matter what I was doing or what I had planned, they came first because they were my brothers. We were the Six Pack and that meant a hell of a lot to me. Clearly more than it did to them.
The she-wolf growled menacingly and started to back up into the closet just as a knock on the door sounded.
“It's about damn time,” I muttered under my breath as I went to the door.
Austin and James pushed inside and quickly shut the door. Austin leaned his back against it as James started checking the windows.
“What's wrong?”
“They're everywhere,” Austin said dramatically.
“Who's everywhere?”
“Basically, every eligible male of age in the Pack. Took us some time to get through the wall of them,” James said.
“What? Why?”
Another low growl sounded from the bedroom as I ran to check on her. Three faces pressed up against the window.
I growled back at them, but it only seemed to make them more aggressive. I pulled the blinds and tried to tune them out.
Slowly she moved back towards the closet.
“It's okay. I won't let them hurt you,” I promised.
“What do we do?” Austin yelled as the noise surrounding us began to increase.
“They have us surrounded. I'm calling Thomas. My deputies are unmated. If they aren’t already out there, then they'd just make things worse if they came.”
“But you guys are okay?” I asked as I walked back into the living room after checking on her. I had to be certain because I knew in that moment that there was absolutely nothing I wouldn't do to protect this woman, even from those closest to me.
“Yeah. I mean we smelled her from more than half a mile away, but it's not making either of us crazy like those fools out there,” James assured me.
“I need to confirm it, but just stay back and move slowly. I can feel her stress levels are high right now and she will attack if she feels threatened. Brady's a testament to that already,” I warned. “Let's do this one at a time. James, you first.”
He nodded and held his hands out to his sides. I knew he was packing, and I wanted to tell him to remove his weapons, but I knew he wouldn't because as much as I needed to protect her, he needed to protect me.
“She won't hurt me,” I assured him.
“I hope you're right.”
He looked around the room cautiously as if he expected her to pop out and attack us at any second.
I knelt down on my knees in front of the closest and spoke softly.
