“It's okay. They're friends and they're here to help. I wouldn't purposefully put you in danger. I thought we'd be safe out here, but I think I underestimated the power of your scent. For some reason it doesn't affect me the way it does them. Maybe because I'm your mate. I don't know. This is James. He's the sheriff here, one of the good guys. And he's mated so he isn't driven by your scent. His wolf is already taken. He’s also a dad. His kid, Carter, is the cutest. I hope you get to meet him and his mate, Katherine, soon. They're really important to me, too.”
Outside I could hear the snarls and growls of other shifters. They were close. It was a bit unsettling. My wolf was itching to be set free and destroy them all just for scaring our mate.
“James. If I shift, I need you to use the tranq on me.”
She growled.
“I don't want to hurt anyone,” I explained to her. “And I will if they try to get in here or if I set my wolf free.”

Chapter 6
“Hi. It's nice to meet you. We're going to do everything we can to keep you safe,” James said.
My whole body was shaking in fear. What had I been thinking? There were too many of them. They were going to destroy me. How could two men keep me safe from the horde of those wanting to hurt me just outside the window.
I'd seen the looks in the eyes of the two men pressed to the glass before Emmett had closed the blinds. I knew that look. It was a sexually driven look, and they'd stop at nothing until they had me. All of them, or the ones who survived the initial attack as they fought each other for dominance and dibs on me.
This wasn't the first time I'd been in a situation like this, but it was the first time I wasn't alone in it.
I believed Emmett when he said he'd do whatever it took to keep me safe. Or at least I believed he would try. That was more than I could say for anyone else I'd ever encountered.
“Austin, get in here.”
A red-haired man ran into the room so fast that it startled me. I jumped back and growled.
“It's okay. He's a friend, too.” Emmett turned to him. “I told you to go slow.”
James chuckled. “Austin doesn't know how to go slow.”
I didn't know how they could joke at a time like this, but it didn't seem to lighten the mood.
A bang on the side of the house had us all freaking out.
“What are we supposed to do?”
Somewhere on the other side of the house came a loud crash.
“Someone just broke your window!” Austin yelled. “They're climbing through and not even caring that they're getting cut.”
“This is really bad. Quick, barricade the door and get her back in the closet away from the windows,” James ordered.
“Like that will help. They're drawn to her scent,” Austin argued.
“It's the best we can do.”
Austin's phone rang, and I could hear yelling through the speakers.
“Put him on speaker,” Emmett said.
The noise all around us was growing even louder, and I was starting to freak out. My pulse was pounding in my ears, nearly drowning out the noise. I had never been so scared, and I knew this may be it. It was finally going to happen and there was nothing I could do about it. I was going to die today.
The thought was only a fleeting one because I'd come too far and been through too much to let that happen.
My survival instincts kicked in, and I knew I had to get away from here. They'd give chase if I ran, but there was also a lot of fighting going on, and I was fast. I'd made it through tough situations before but never quite this bad. I had to at least try.
As I was starting to formulate an exit plan, Thomas yelled at Emmett through the phone speaker.
