Luca places a reassuring hand on my shoulder. “It is but I also know you’re under a lot of pressure to find a partner due to Father’s ill health and Mother’s desperate need for grandbabies.”
He’s not wrong.
If our father hadn’t gotten sick again this year, I’d probably have waited another year or two to propose to Giada; we have only been together for five months. It’s my father’s greatest wish to see all his children happily married, and my mother’s to have us popping out grandchildren. As the oldest, my mother has told me that I should have gotten married first, not my younger brother. It’s not like I wouldn’t have been marrying Giada eventually, because I would be. I just would have waited a little longer to propose.
“Are you getting the grandchildren talk, too?” I ask him.
He nods in agreement.
“And?” I say, turning to him.
“And, well …”
I still as a smirk falls across his lips. “No way,” I say.
He nods enthusiastically. “I’m going to be a dad.”
I pull my brother into a tight hug. I’m so incredibly happy for them. “Why didn’t you say something sooner?”
“Because of all this,” he says, waving his hand around the lavish room. “Lilly and I decided we would wait until after your engagement party to announce it. Tonight is your night,” he tells me.
“Do Mamma and Papà know?”
He shakes his head.
Shit. “Mamma is going to lose her mind when she finds out,” I say, which has me chuckling; she is going to want to be a part of that pregnancy as if it were her own. “Who else knows?”
“Only Natalia as she’s so close with Lilly.”
Our youngest sister and Lilly hit it off from the start, unlike our other sister, Allegra. I understand Lilly and Luca are not her greatest fans, seeing as Allegra tracked Luca and Lilly down on New Year’s Day years ago and presented his ex to him on their doorstep. All while knowing her best friend at the time was cheating on her brother with his best friend; Allegra even helped them hide it from Luca. Since then, everyone is civil with each other, but that’s where it stops. Allegra’s just cut from a different cloth than Luca, Natalia, and me; even growing up, she never hung out with us, preferring to be with anyone else. It is what it is with her.
I can’t believe my brother is going to have a baby. This is wild. I’m so happy for them and relieved that this might stop our mother from harassing me.
“Congrats, man, this is the best news.”
He gives me a wide smile, and I can see he is happy that he’s finally told me.
“She’s just gone three months. We wanted to wait to make sure everything was okay before telling anyone. She’s had a miscarriage before this one, right after we found out the first time, she lost it which devastated her.”
“I’m sorry, I had no idea,” I say.
He shakes his head. “We didn’t want to say anything, it all happened quickly, but everything is good now and that’s what we focus on.”
“Hey, losers, what are you doing hanging out here?” Natalia asks, joining us in our secluded corner of the party.
“I just told him about Lilly,” Luca adds.
Our sister’s face lights up. “Isn’t that awesome? We are going to be an aunt and uncle.”
Uncle.
I’m going to be a freaking uncle. Those words hit me square in the chest and nearly take my breath away.
“Yeah, it’s cool.”
“Sure is. So anyway, where is Giada and why is it taking her so long to join her engagement party?” my sister asks.
I shrug my shoulders. “However long it takesVogueto get whatever they need, I guess.”
