To their credit they’ve stuck by me through all that has happened. I thought they would drop me with time, but they haven’t. The only issue is that there is a huge lifestyle difference between us now; they think what I walked away from is the goal. I feel differently.
“For me? Yes. I know it’s the kind of thing that most people dream about, but it’s not for me. It’s not the kind of life I want. I see my parents and their friends. I look at how they live their lives, and that’s the last thing I want. It seems to work for them, but it would just kill me slowly. I actually want to live a life of purpose. A life where I do something that brings me joy. Something I can be proud to have accomplished. Not something I inherited from a family member generations ago who had no idea I would ever exist.”
“But why can’t you do both?” Laura asks.
I laugh. “I intend to climb to the highest levels of the culinary world. Do you really think I can do that while running a company like my family’s?”
Laura shrugs. “Aren’t you the one who always says ‘where there’s a will there’s a way’?”
“Yes, but I can’t exactly be in two places at once. Plus, if I divide my attention between two things like that, neither will work.”
“I guess you’re right,” Jamie says.
Laura clears her throat. “Anyway, back to the nanny job. Have you met the boy?”
“Ethan? No, I haven’t.”
“Is he married?” Laura asks. “Mr. Harris I mean. I’ve never heard of a wife.”
“Yeah, he barely talks about her, but I found one interview online where he said she died two years ago. They lived in Texas at the time. It was after her death that he moved his son here.”
“That’s so sad.” Laura’s hand goes to her heart.
“Yeah,” I agree.
“So what’s he like? Reid Harris.” Jamie asks.
I shrug. “I guess he’s all right.”
Laura and Jamie exchange a look.
“Just all right?” Jamie asks.
“Yeah.”
“Is he as hot as he looks in pictures?” Laura asks.
“No? Not really…”
They both burst out in laughter, yet again.
“You find him attractive, don’t you?” Jamie says.
“No, I don’t.”
“You totally do,” Laura pushes back.
I sigh. “Fine, he might be a little, tiny bit attractive.” My friends beam at me from ear to ear. “But I am not attracted to him.”
Laura rolls her eyes. “What does that even mean?”
“Sounds like a load of BS…” Jamie whispers.
“It means that even though he’s attractive, I actually can’t stand him. He seems to think he is the king of the world. I already don’t like being ordered around and told what to do, and I think ordering people around is literally his identity.”
I continue, “He’s arrogant, and very direct, almost to the point of being rude. To be honest, he’s also a bit condescending, and it rubs me the wrong way. Like I said, he’s attractive, but I am not attracted.”
