“Do I know what?” Noelle’s heart pounded.
“I didn’t want to put that in a text,” Yannis replied.
“Please tell me what’s going on,” pleaded Noelle.
“It might not have been an accident. Someone may have been following him. They think the person was drunk,” explained Sophia.
“Did the police arrest him? Has he been caught?” cried Noelle as she paced.
“The police are looking for her. It was a woman. We have not heard yet if she has been located. But we think it was Athena. We do not know if she intentionally tried to hit him, Sophia. But, after she hit him, she drove away. There was another driver who saw what happened,” said Yannis.
Noelle covered her face with her hands. Her blood boiled and her heart raced. Was Athena that crazy? That dangerous?
“They will find her and she will go to jail. Don’t worry. She will get what she deserves. I will make sure of it. And then when Demetri is feeling better, I will smack him and tell him what a buffo he is for being involved with that slush.” Sophia punched the air.
“Slush?” Noelle was confused. Buffo meant dummy, but she hadn’t heard slush before. Is it even Greek?
“You know, the woman who sleeps with many men. Slush.” Sophia threw her hands up.
“She means slut. Slut, not slush.” Yannis shook his head at Sophia.
Noelle covered her mouth and stifled a giggle.
Demetri moved, and they rushed to his side. He was awake.
“Demetri?” Noelle clasped his hand with hers.
“Noelle, is that you?” Demetri rubbed his eyes.
“Yes, it’s me. How do you feel?” Noelle squeezed his hands.
He tried to speak. “In pain but better. What happened? The last thing I remember is driving my car.”
Sophia broke out into a flourish of Greek, waving her hands in the air, her voice rising with each uttered word. Yannis interrupted her every so often, and as far as Noelle could tell, the two of them filled Demetri in about the events that had occurred. When they finally fell silent, Demetri closed his eyes. Opening them, he said, “I am so sorry I ever met that woman.”
“You have nothing to be sorry about. It isn’t your fault. Don’t be silly. We’re just happy you are okay.” Noelle leaned in to hug him gently.
“He should be a little sorry for mixing with that slush,” said Sophia.
Yannis gave her a pointed look. “Slut. S-L-U-T, Slut!”
“Whatever.” She waved her hand in the air. “I speak the truth. He is going to be fine. He is lucky I don’t smack him for his stupidity. Men, always thinking with their cock.” She faced Noelle. “I am sorry, Noelle. I do not mean to be crude.”
Noelle giggled. “It’s okay. I was thinking the same thing,” she said as she winked at Demetri.
“I am so glad you two can tease me when I am like this,” he shrugged.
They continued to chat. “Sophia, we should let them have some time alone.” Yannis motioned to the door. Sophia hugged her brother, and she and Yannis stepped out of the room.
“If you wanted me to come to Greece sooner, you could’ve just asked.” Noelle nudged his arm.
Demetri smiled. “I am happy to see you, but I wish it was for a different reason. I guess there is one good thing out of this situation. I get to have you here now with me, instead of having to wait until Christmas.”
“Are you in a lot of pain?” Noelle felt his head. She didn’t think he had a fever, but you always felt someone’s head when they were hurt. It made sense in her mind.
“I am doing okay. I have some pain, but the medicines are helping.” He closed his eyes.
“Okay, good. If it worsens, let me know and I will ask for more. Demetri, I… I’m so sorry this happened to you. I need you to know, I… I love you. I love you so much.” Tears streamed down her cheeks.I don’t care if he doesn’t say it back right now, but I need him to know how I feel.
