Noelle: Yay! I will book my ticket today! I’m so excited and I can’t wait to see you!Noelle jumped up and did a happy dance.I’m going to Greece!
They texted a few more minutes and then she got off the phone and booked a flight for the holidays so they could be together. Hopefully, her family would understand. There was still more time before she and Demetri would see each other, but at least they had a date set!Maybe then I can have a talk with him about our relationship and where he sees it going.
Chapter 49
LATE NIGHT CALL ~Noelle~
Noelle was sleeping when she heard her phone ring. It was about 4 am. She scrambled for the phone. Why is he calling me now?“Hello, Demetri?” She rubbed her eyes.
“Noelle, this is Yannis. I am sorry to call you at this time of night. Demetri has been in an accident.”
Noelle shot up from her bed. “Is he ok? What happened?”If he’s calling me, it has to be serious. Her stomach twisted into knots and she got up and paced.
“He is not doing well, my dear. He was in a car accident and is in critical condition in the hospital. Someone ran into him. He is in surgery now.”
“Ok. I’m coming. I’ll see how soon I can catch a flight. I…”
“Noelle, I will text you as soon as we have news. Demetri is a strong man. He will be okay.”
“Okay, thank you for calling. I’ll let you know about my flights as soon as I get everything taken care of. Please tell him I am on my way. Good night.”
Noelle hung up the phone and tried to keep herself together so she could get to Greece. She packed up some things and did a quick search for flights. She booked herself on the earliest flight available, took an Uber to the airport, and waited for her departure.
Noelle still hadn’t heard from Yannis when it was time to board the plane. She texted him to let him know her flight information and that she was shutting down her phone for take-off. As she sat in her seat, she turned towards the window and rubbed her chest. My heart feels like it’s breaking. He has to be okay. She closed her eyes and let the tears fall. She hoped the plane ride would go fast.
Noelle woke up as her body felt the plane descending. The last few minutes felt like forever. As soon as they landed and got the ok, she turned on her phone and was relieved to find a text from Yannis.
Yannis: He is out of surgery. He is stable. I will fill in the rest when you come. Let me know when you arrive, and I will pick you up from the docks.
The rest?Oh gosh, what else is wrong? She sent a quick reply.
Noelle: I just landed. I will take the first boat to the island and text as soon as I can.
She deplaned, got through customs, found her luggage, and caught a taxi to the boat shuttles. Another couple of hours passed before she finally texted Yannis to let him know she was almost there.I just need to see him. Is he going to be okay? How bad is he?Her mind was crazy with worry and scary thoughts flooding her brain. When she got off the boat, Yannis was waiting for her.
“Demetri was badly hurt. He has several broken bones. He looks worse than he is. They think they have it all taken care of,” said Yannis.
“So he’ll be okay?” she asked.
“The doctors think so, but they want to watch him for a couple of days. Come, I will take you to him.”
Yannis drove her to the hospital. When they arrived in Demetri’s room, more tears spilled from her eyes when she saw Demetri’s body all bandaged and beaten up from the wreck. Demetri was so bruised and battered, Noelle was afraid to touch him. He was asleep. She brushed back some of his hair and grasped his hand, placing a gentle kiss on his cheek.
“Noelle, this is Sophia, Demetri’s sister.” Yannis motioned to Sophia. Noelle finally noticed the woman in the room and immediately saw the resemblance.
Sophia greeted Noelle with hugs and kisses, as if they were old friends. “It is so good to finally meet you. I am sorry this is the reason.”
The two of them cried and reassured each other Demetri would be okay. Noelle sat next to Demetri and held his hand while he slept, while Sophia and Yannis left the room to get some food. After a while, Noelle fell asleep in the chair next to him, never letting him go.
A few hours passed, and Noelle woke up as she heard him stir. His eyes slowly opened. Demetri tried to speak, but it was difficult to understand what he was saying. Noelle shook her head. “It’s okay. Don’t talk. Just rest. I’m here with you. You were in an accident, but you’re going to be alright. I love you, Demetri, so much.”
It was the first time she told him she loved him. She had to make sure he knew. She didn’t know if he was going to be alright, but she hoped and prayed he would be. He smiled, closed his eyes, and fell back asleep.
Hours went by and Demetri slept. A doctor came in to talk to Sophia and Yannis. He spoke in Greek, so Noelle didn’t know what was said to them, but from the looks of relief on Yannis and Sophia’s faces, it must’ve been good news. “The doctor is happy with how he is doing,” Sophia explained. “He is responding well. They will take him for more testing as precaution, but everything should heal okay in time.”
Noelle breathed a sigh of relief and hugged Sophia.
“Does she know?” Sophia looked at Yannis.
