I glanced down at my palm to find that Liam had very neat and loopy handwriting.
The one you seek will find you. Wait here.
-An old, dead vampire
“Is this some sort of joke? Because it’s not funny,” I said, looking back up at the window.
I let out a sigh when Cord still sat there with his furry head pressed against the glass.
“I do not joke about the spirits.”
“The one I seek is in the window,” I said.
“I’m not the decoder – just the delivery boy,” Liam sighed. “If the message giver wanted me to know what he meant he wouldn’t have been so damn cryptic.
“And Duke got the same message? Have you taken it to him yet?” I asked.
“No. I came here first even though he was closer. You just met your mate. I figured maybe it was more urgent for you. Though, I guess Duke’s more likely to leave than you are.”
“He’s sticking with me to---” I said and blinked in realization. “He’s just sticking with me.”
“Good. I hope so. This spirit thinks you’re both waiting on someone. I’m going back to the meeting hall. You two should really come eat. Maybe if you give them some space Cord and Starry will too,” Liam said, turning to leave.
“Magic has glued me to this spot,” I shook my head.
“Who would come here to teach us vampyric magic?”My wolf whispered into my thoughts, but I didn’t have the answer.
“I don’t know, but they’ll have to teach me right here in Starry’s yard. This is where we live until he comes out,”I thought back to him.
Chapter Eight
Cord
“What did Liam just give my mate?” I growled, pressing my head harder against the window and narrowing my eyes until I couldn’t see the floater anymore.
“Hey!” Starry said. “Your mate’s right there. You can walk straight out there and do whatever you want with him. You don’t get to get all territorial and mad at Liam. You can walk straight out there and give him whatever you want to. Liam has Bobby. So I’m one hundred percent positive he has no interest in Blithe anymore than I do.”
I pressed a forepaw against the window hoping Blithe would raise his hand in return and let me read the note. He waved with the sticky note free hand and I sighed.
“Will you open the door, please?”I asked, arching my back to stretch out my coiled tight muscles before leaping out of the window onto the floor.
“It would be my pleasure if it saves Blithe and Daniel from living on the front walk for the rest of their natural lives,” Starry chuckled.
I paused in the doorway allowing the cool spring wind to billow around me and carry in the scents of the men who stood on the walk. For a moment, I almost pushed my way into control, but pulled back before the shift started. What the hell was I going to do?
“Do I need to give you a push?” Starry asked.
“Don’t you dare!”I hissed over the group link.
Daniel smirked and I wanted to tell him to mind his own damn business. Everyone needed to mind their own damn business. Then I could figure out how in the hell to mind mine.
Blithe waved again and I took a deep breath. I was a cat. The blood of predators pounded in my veins. I could do this. I could do this. I could --- I put one paw forward and then pulled it back. Okay, maybe I couldn’t do this.
“Cord, I love you, but you’re letting the chill in. In or out, please,”Starry said.
“I’m making up my mind,”I said.
Blithe grinned at me. I wasn’t sure how far onto the group link he was. The New Hemlock Wolf Pack was technically part of the Hemlock Wolf pack that he was born into. His giant draconic-wolf cousin was probably on the Moonscale Flight link too. Shit! Shit! Shit! Had Blithe stood there eavesdropping on us the whole time?
