He clucks his tongue while Andreas follows Miklos' directions. “I’m not sure, Stav. It would be best to keep your guard until you’re with the other men. Do you have a piece on you?”
I look over at my friend, who points to the glovebox. “I have two guns in there.”
“Are the serial numbers on them?” I question.
He looks at me casually before looking back at the road. “I’m an attorney. Of course, I know the rules regarding firearms.”
He doesn’t say anything more, and I know he’s worried this is a setup. We enter the parking lot, and sure enough, a big black SUV is waiting for us. The Mercedes pulls in behind us and immediately jumps out of the car.
He's charging at me, and I open the door as I’m ready to finish it.
The man is shorter and has a bit of a beer gut hanging over his pants. His hair is shaved closely to his head with tattoos on his head.
“Who the fuck are you?” I demand while pulling out a gun from the glovebox.
He’s pulling out his gun and shoving it in my face. “I could be asking you the same questions. You guys messed everything up.”
The Bilias family comes storming in and grabs the man. He doesn’t have a chance in hell for what will happen to him. He gets thrown into the back of the SUV with my dad’s men, looking for further instruction.
“See you back at the compound.”
Chapter Twenty-Seven
Detective Milgram
Rolling out of bed and seeing the number of missed calls on my phone can only proves one thing. I shook enough trees and got enough information to start closing in on those assholes.
I don’t call any of them back; I will be going into the precinct shortly anyway. It is supposed to be my day off, but there are seldom days off for being a detective.
In the past week and a half, since my investigation began to take place regarding Derek Bancroft’s untimely death, there have been three more murders. These three murders aren’t noticeably connected to Bancroft’s death, but this is suspicious.
After calling one of my informants in another family, Jimmy Adams, with the Irish in town, he began to spill some exciting information regarding the Bilias Family. Stavros is rumored to be returning, and now there is word on the street that he’s serious about Audrina.
There’s the rub, though. If Stavros were as clever as he seems, he would have realized that being in a relationship with Audrina was not a good idea and was going to sink his career. I don’t give a fuck either way, but I’m determined to get this case closed before it drags on.
I’m at the precinct in about twenty minutes and am now on my third cup of coffee. The jittery drink is just enough to keep me functioning, and that’s it. The caffeine doesn’t do much more than keep the headaches at bay.
“Milgram!” Captain Marcus yells from his office across the floor. “Get your ass in my office.”
I just got in. What could I have done that pissed him off already?
“What’s up?” I ask and lean against the door.
“I got an anonymous tip last night to check your bank statements.”
I throw my head back. “What’s going on with my bank statements?” I truly don’t know what he’s implying, but I can guarantee I won’t like where this line of questioning is going.
“Debra, did you win the lottery?”
At hearing the captain use my first name, I know shit is bad. “No. I make the same amount as I did before. What are you seeing on my account?”
“I see a large stack of bills that have been paid off.”
I yank the pages out of his hands to see what he’s talking about and am almost not surprised to see what happened.
The Bilias Family is trying to set me up.
