“I was hoping for good looking,” he said, a smile pulling at his mouth, “but I’ll take dominant.”
“You’re a priest. I shouldn’t be saying that.”
The happiness melted and I yelped as his hand locked onto my hip and he pulled me down to the mattress to loom over me. “You so sure about the priest part? I’m not.”
Chapter 6
Chase
Dark and light raged a war inside me. I couldn’t understand how I’d changed so much in barely any time at all. Kit had a way of pulling out what should have remained locked away. Something was so deeply rooted, even losing my memory couldn’t make disappear. I wanted her. I wanted her so damn bad that it had me moving off instinct, rather than thought.
“Forgive me. I’ll just find something for you to wear.” I couldn’t get off the bed fast enough. I turned, pulling open the middle drawer to the dresser. Flashes of me looming over her, her eyes wide and afraid, were going to kill me. I fucking loved it. Why did she have to be so beautiful? The spell she cast was making it impossible for me to pretend to be the good guy I’d perfected since I had awoken.
I grabbed out a white undershirt and pajama pants for me and tossed her a matching T-shirt. “I’m going to lock the door behind me. I promise not to bother you again tonight. Feel free to,” I gestured toward the adjoining restroom, “make yourself at home. Shower, whatever you need. Just…stay in the room. Do not open this door. I say that for you own protection. If you’re smart, you’ll heed my warning.”
I didn’t wait for a response. Couldn’t. My fingers turned the lock and I hesitated before pulling the door shut. I kept my back to her, trying not to imagine her stripping down and getting in the shower. Or curling up in my bed.
Could she tell how close I was to taking her the way I wanted? All I had to do was go back over and pin her down again. Then just reach up to my headboard. The cuffs were attached. I could see them in my mind.
Angrily, I forced myself forward. With it, I brought the door closed. The advance toward the stairs was a chore and would have been hard had I not paused outside of my office. Curiosity had me flipping on the light and walking in. A large oak desk with a computer resting on top drew me forward, until I was sitting down and bringing the monitor to life.
“Nothing.” The background was another scenery. Something I seemed to have a lot of. There were no windows opened or search engines pulled up. My mouth twisted and I looked over at the phone that sat to the side. The number eighteen flashed on the built in answering machine. Anxiety flared for some unexplainable reason, but I pushed the button, allowing them to play.
“Hey there, Father. You didn’t show up like you promised. I was calling to see if you forgot about our date. Call me.”
The loud beep had me blinking past the confusion of the woman who’d called.
“Father, it’s Candi. Kimmy is upset that you haven’t returned her calls. I keep telling her you’re probably busy, but you know her. She’s always so worried. Anyway, can you please call her when you get a chance? Thanks.”
Beep!
“Hey, Father, this is Max. You didn’t show up for service this morning. We’re all getting a little worried. Give me or Ed a call when you get this. I need to talk to you about a problem we have. There are some rumors going around that you need to know about.”
Beep!
More calls of the same nature came through before the first woman’s voice came back on. The hysteria in her tone couldn’t be mistaken. Father? Pick up! Tell me it isn’t true. Chase! Sobbing registered and it lasted for seconds before muffled words began again. “I know he did this. I tried to tell you, but you wouldn’t listen, and now he’s probably killed you.”
The call ended and I pulled the phone free, frantically scanning through the caller ID displayed on the small window.
“Do you think she knows who hurt you?”
I spun around, nearly dropping the phone at Kit standing there in the white shirt I’d left for her. It came down a few inches above her knees and I didn’t miss her hard nipples pushing through the thin material. It had me standing before I even realized it.
“I locked that door for a reason.”
“You have a landline. Why didn’t you tell me? Can I use it real quick?”
My head cocked to the side, but I stayed silent.
“Maybe you want to call her back first? I can wait until you finish.”
Tighter, I gripped the phone. The voices, the urges, pushed through, not allowing me to think of anything but the danger Kit faced from me. While she waited for some sort of response, they built, growing more powerful. “Did you not hear me?” I placed the phone down and walked around the desk. “Or maybe you wanted to test me?”
She limped back.
“I heard voices. I was coming to see who was here. But then I heard...”
I advanced at a leisurely pace, feeling the stranger within surface. He surged to the forefront, leaving my adrenaline racing. Kit’s lips separated as she continue to retreat.
