Church went as wellas expected. There was lots of yelling, men pounding their chests, and expecting the women to agree. Yeah, I walked out of that bullshit and came home.
I doubt they even noticed me leave until the phone calls began. I got in the tub and let the hot water relax my right muscles. When the phone stopped ringing, I figured they either got the point or one of those assholes was in the process of breaking in to make sure I was ok.
What I didn’t expect was that phone call from Diego.
There has always been something familiar about him. Like I knew him from a previous life. He felt safe to me, and that isn’t a feeling I get easily around the opposite sex.
I think over everything we talked about as I pull on some shorts and a tank top to start drying my hair. I’ve been dressed for three seconds when my front door slams open.
“SHOCK!” I roll my eyes and turn the hair dryer off.
I walk into my living room and put my hands on my hips. Not only did the brutes break down my door, but my poor glass coffee table was trashed as well.
I raise an eyebrow at Mayhem and point to the closet.
“You, broom!” I turn my attention to his brother.
“It was him!” Nova narcs, and I fight my smirk.
“Maddox James,” His shoulders sag at his name.
“It was!” He insists but picks up my door and tries in vain to stand it up, but the hinges are broken.
I sigh and go back to drying my hair.
“I got a prospect coming to fix the door.” I ignore Mayhem and continue flipping my hair to get all the curls dry.
“Shock?” I grit my teeth at these fools who aren’t getting the hint.
“Does it look like I want to talk? If you wanted my opinion on my own life, you would have let me talk at Church. Fix my shit and get out.” I toss the hair dryer on my bathroom counter and go into my bedroom.
“You left,” I spin around and almost end up on my ass from how close he is, but he grabs my arms to steady me.
“Maverick Ashton, get the fuck out of my space. I’m sick of all you guys trying to dictate my life! I can protect myself.” I put him out into the hall and slammed my door shut.
I busy myself folding a few loads of laundry I had piled up and listening while they started cleaning up the mess they made. An hour or so later a knock on my bedroom door has me reaching for the TV remote to mute it.
“Come in,” I cross my arms in defense as the door opens and then drop them immediately at the face that greets me.
“Those fuckers call you in for backup or to talk some sense into me?” Dice leans on the doorframe, smiling at me.
“Talk sense into you? Who would ever try doing that?” I laugh as she climbs on my bed with me.
“Mallory Jane, I’ve missed you. You need to visit more often.” I hug her, too.
“You got the meat heads. Seer has me busy down south. I just so happened to be in town on a run when those brothers of minecalled. They fixed the door, by the way.” I nod and lean back, still hugging my god-sister.
“Alright, spill. Tell me everything.” I sigh and let my arms fall away from her.
“Nothing to tell. I got fired, but somehow, my old boss got my job back. Wolf wants me to stay as a Medic full-time. There’s someone stalking me. It’s a regular Tuesday.” I unmute the TV, and Mallory turns it off.
“Honey, it’s Monday.” She holds my stare until I nod that I understand her point.
“OK, so I’m a little out of touch with reality. Fuck off. It’s been a rough few weeks. Besides, I just need to get myself on a schedule.” She nods her head as she listens to me.
I play with the corner of my comforter, but the silence between us grows louder the longer she doesn’t say anything back to me. I glance up, and Dice is grinning at me.
“WHAT!” I just can’t take it anymore.
