Page 191 of Not Over You

“I wouldn’t worry too much. He’s probably getting slammed with work. And I know he’s looking for a house too.”

“He is.”

“I sense your irritation.”

I huff. “Stop using your superpowers on me.”

“Just saying.”

“Okay, I am irritated.”

She laughs. “I’m not surprised. You just hated him a week ago. Or you sure put on a good show at the auction.”

“That was not a show. I gotta go.”

Her voice dances with humor. “So you can get more annoyed.”

“GOODBYE, Wendi.”

I crawl in bed annoyed.

I wake up angry.

That son of a bitch. Not a single call. Not a damn text.

What the hell?

Does he think he can just get laid and then ghost me again?

I sling my foot over the side of the bed and stand up before I realize what I’m doing. “Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.” I flop back onto the pillows.

And this whole ankle thing is his fault too!

My nose is stuck to the computer screen when Maddy pulls up a chair next to me. “Good morning, and what’s going on with you?”

She slides a cup of my favorite tea in front of me. The warm, sweet smell drifts up to my brain.

I pick up the cup and sit back.

Slowly, she tilts her head like an expectant puppy.

“Ugh. I’m pissed at Hunter and I’m stressed out about buying the house.”

My phone chirps a text announcement. Every time a message comes in, I’m jumpy as hell. This one’s from Katerina. Going to close in record time. So happy for you.

I’m breathless for a second. “Whew. That’s my realtor. Looks like things are proceeding quickly.”

Maddy smiles. “This is good news, Rach. Everything is going to work out fine.”

“Not with Hunter, it’s not. He had his chance, and he proved his worth... again.”

“What happened?”

“He was supposed to show up at the house inspection and he didn’t. And I haven’t heard from him in thirty-six hours. No calls. No texts.”

She frowns. “Hm. That sounds weird.”

“No, it sounds like Hunter.”
