I chuckle. “It was interesting.”
“Oh, you had your date already?”
Not sure how much to say, I reply, “Actually, we had two.”
“Damn. She must have really liked her purchase.”
Since this is a small town and he is a detective, I might as well spill it before the grapevine has its way with whatever it may dredge up.
“Turns out the mystery woman is someone I dated before.”
Reynolds swipes his key-fob and holds the door open for me. We step into the cool quiet office area of the police department.
He raises his brows. “Now, this just gets more and more interesting.”
“Yeah, tell me about it.”
“You’re coming to dinner, right?”
“Six at Nora’s Diner.”
“That’s it. And tomorrow you can join me. I’ve got some cases that will be perfect for you to jump on.”
“Sounds good. I’m eager to get started.”
We head in different directions, him to his office, me to mine, with so many things on my mind. Rachel at the top of my list. But that has to wait. Next up on my agenda is to call the realtor and schedule some more showings.
CHAPTER 9
Maddy’s got a spot all set up for me in the office at Beach Vibes. “Thanks for doing all this.” I motion toward the chair with a pillow, the ice pack, and the plate full of cookies.
She beams at me. “Of course, girl. I got your back.”
I slide into the chair and prop up the ankle.
“How’s the pain?”
“Not bad, as long as I don’t do anything fancy.”
“Want anything?”
“No, I’m all set.”
Maddy grins. “Good, now that I’ve got you cornered, you have to dish. Everything.”
I laugh. “I put a contract on a house.”
“And got chased by a cougar and rescued by your Ex all in one day.”
“That’s how I roll, you know. All or nothing.”
She snorts out her tea when she bursts into laughter. “That’s true. Just like buying that date come hell or high water.”
I squinch my nose. “It was ridiculous, wasn’t it?”
She shrugs. “I don’t know. The money’s going to a good cause. But you might have gotten the same date for free.”
I tilt back in my chair. Covering my face with both hands. “I can’t think about that money.”
