He tried to look happy and failed. “We can get that fixed, too. I found a spa that will take you. They’ll make sure you’re clean inside and out. They’ll fix your hair and skin and help you relax.”
She wanted to throw something at him. “You’re kidding me, right?”
He looked shocked. “No. Your father and I think it would be a good idea.”
“My father? What the hell does he have to say about our relationship, or are you his puppet?”
“We both have your best interests at heart. We just want to help you,” Arthur said.
She stood and leaned over the desk, putting her hands on the top. “How can you fix the fact that I was raped repeatedly?”
He flinched and swallowed. He looked like he was going to vomit at any moment.
“Not only that, I was made to give men blowjobs. They held my mouth open with something. I was also beaten and sodomized daily.”
He paled and took several steps back. “Jesus, this isn’t worth it.”
“What isn’t?” she asked.
“The money.”
Sage straightened. “What money?”
“The money your father was going to give me to be with you.”
“Why would he pay you money?”
He turned red.
“You had this agreement before I was taken?” she asked.
“Yes. At the time, you were a fat cow. I hated seeing you naked.”
Every word felt like a knife in her body, but she didn’t show it. “Did my kidnapping ruin all your plans?”
“No, it was supposed to get rid of you so he could have your money, and I didn’t have to touch you.”
She felt the blood drain from her face as the words of the first man she dealt with came to mind. It always puzzled her how they knew her name. Then they talked about her being targeted and brought to their attention.
“You set me up to get kidnapped?”
“It was mainly your father, but I went with it. You weren’t supposed to come back.”
Her mouth dropped open. “Do you realize all the pain I went through? I was ripped apart. I bled internally most of the time. I’ll have scars for the rest of my life. And for what? Money?” Her voice slowly got louder.
Arthur had the grace to look uncomfortable. “I didn’t think beyond the fact you’d be gone.”
“You son of a bitch. Get the fuck out of my office and stay the fuck away from me!”
He sniffed and raised his head. “Don’t worry. I hope never to see you again.”
Sage stood frozen. Her own father had set her up. God, the pain was more than she could deal with. She needed time to herself.
She rushed out of her office and straight for the elevator, ignoring someone who called her name.
“Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on,” she chanted as she waited for the elevator to stop at her floor.
She exhaled when it stopped, and she waited for the door to open. She was close. She could handle the few seconds it would take to get into her place.
