It was then she heard the sound of a trigger being pulled back. Instantly she froze.

“Who are you and where are you going?”

Slowly she turned around and saw a big, burly cowboy staring at her.

“Hi,” she said. “My car broke down aways back down the road and I was trying to find someone to help me.”

His eyes narrowed. “Then why were you sneaking around.”

“I wasn’t sneaking,” she said. “I thought I heard voices. Someone said they were moving the horses and I thought I would find them and see if they could help me.”

“Carlos,” he yelled. “We got a trespasser.”

“I thought Texas was the friendly state. I’m not trespassing. My car is broke down and I need help. I think it’s the battery and a jump is all I need,” she said trying to act the stupid blonde. “The key just clicks.”

“Why didn’t you call for help? You got a cell phone,” he said gazing at her with the meanest eyes she’d ever seen.

“No cell reception,” she replied. “You’re way out here and the cell tower and my phone aren’t communicating.”

The man didn’t seem to believe her and in fact, his expression had not changed.

“Start walking to the main house. The boss needs to know about this,” he said. “Carlos.”

A man came around the corner. “What in the hell do you want?”

“Look what I found near the whelping shed,” he said.

The man sighed. “Take her to the boss. I’ll go with you.”

Camila didn’t move. Finally the man shoved her. “Get going.”

To keep from falling, she started walking. Shoving her phone into her pocket, she hit the emergency button and then she did her best to find the recorder button, but without seeing the screen it was hard.

“Where is your car?”

“Down at the roadside park,” she said. “It stalled there.”

The man turned to Carlos. “Go down there and see if there’s a car.” He held his hand out to Camila. “Give me your keys.”

“Are you certain I can trust you?”

“If the car is stalled, it ain’t going anywhere,” he said. “But I think you’re lying.”

The man was staring at her like he didn’t believe anything she’d told him.

“Not very trustworthy, are you?” she said pulling out her keys. “Here.”

The man took her keys and then she saw him get on an ATV and ride off. She didn’t have much time until they realized her car didn’t have any problems.

“In the house,” he said.

She walked into a beautiful mansion. The man made good money doing something. She didn’t know there was this kind of money in being a rancher.

“Down the hall,” he said, pointing.

As they entered the hallway, she heard a man talking on the phone.

“We plan on arriving on Tuesday,” he said.
