“I don’t want you to worry about that. I have Lucy covering right now,” Jaxson said.

A whine left her lips at the mention of her coworkers name. If Lucy found out she was covering for Sofia, it wasn’t going to end well. Lucy already gave her dirty looks, and she didn’t want to give her anything else to fuel the fire.

“What’s wrong?” he asked. “You can talk to Daddy.”

“Nothing,” she said. “I am just tired, my hair is greasy, and I need to get to my shift.”

She knew it wasn’t right that she kept lying, but she really didn’t want them to bother with this. Why were they worried since she wore a hat?

“I’m going to give you five seconds to take it off or I will,” he said.

Sofia gasped and looked up. “You can’t do that!”

Her eyes went wide as she realized she just looked fully up, giving him sight of what her eye and face looked like. Before she could drop her head, he grabbed hold of her chin.

“What the fuck happened?”

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

SOFIA

Sofia stared at him with wide eyes. Shit. She should’ve thought about her actions before she looked up. How could she be so stupid to lift her head when she knew she was trying to hide her face?

“Shit, Tiny,” Dominic said. “Who did that to you?”

She looked up at Dominic and saw his murderous expression. She didn’t know why he was looking at her like that. Did Dominic care about her? Sofia didn’t think there were many people that cared about her here in Missouri. Not many people knew her and she didn’t have any friends.

“Little one,” Jaxson softly said. “Can you look at Daddy for me?”

Her eyes wandered over to his. She didn’t know what to say to Jaxson right now. What was she supposed to say?

“Can you tell me what happened?” he asked.

She felt a mix of being exhausted and having all the adrenaline pumping through her. She didn’t want to let him know what happened because it would show all the lies she told him.

“I fell last night when I was walking to the bathroom and hit my bedpost,” she whispered, cringing at how bad the lie was.

She should’ve thought about what she was going to say if anyone asked, but she hadn’t. Lying on the spot wasn’t a strong suit of hers and it was showing right now.

“Bullshit!” Dominic raised his voice. “What the fuck happened to your eye and cheek? Who hit you?”

She flinched at his loud voice and cowered away from him. Deep down she knew he wasn’t going to hurt her, but right now her brain wasn’t thinking. It heard his tone of voice and the volume and immediately thought it was dangerous.

“Dominic,” Jaxson said. “Don’t yell at my girl. And no using that language around her.”

“Sorry,” Dominic said. “Just please tell us Sofia. Who did this to you?”

Tears formed in her eyes as both of them looked at her and asked questions. She didn't know what to do in this situation and everything was becoming overwhelming. What was she supposed to do? She didn’t know the guy who mugged her.

“Tiny,” Dominic said. “It’s okay. You can tell us.”

“Dominic is right,” Jaxson agreed with him. “You can tell us anything. You trust Daddy, right?”

She nodded her head but still didn’t speak. If she told Jaxson what happened, he would know that she lied about all those times someone came to pick her up. She didn’t know anyone in this city who would pick her up and she knew Jaxson would be disappointed in her when he found out.

“Little one,” Jaxson said. “It’s going to be okay. Can you tell Daddy what happened? Who hit you?”

A sob broke out of her mouth, and she flung herself at Jaxson. His arms wrapped around her and she continued to cry in his arms. Everything was so overwhelming and she just didn't want to talk right now.
